Jose Neves, RIP
We have just learned that our dear friend Jose Neves passed away some 3 months ago. To many Jose was a taxi driver to us over the 23 years we had property in Carvoeiro he was a dear friend. Even though we left Cvo 8 years ago, we kept in regular contact sharing the ‘highs and lows’ of our Benfica su...

Re: Big Will
I have some fond memories of nights in The Roundup during our time in Cvo. It is sad to hear that Will has been assaulted and then suffered a stroke - another setback for such a truly nice guy - who's had more than his fair share of health challenges. It's 7 years since we've been in Cvo and we're h...

Every time your passport is read by a scanner (airport or seaport) they know where you are. The same applies to the use of a credit/debit card - Big Brother is watching your every move

Re: Dilemma
Not easy - a personal conversation is the starting point before 'burning the 14 year bridge' - regardless of how you feel now. Undoubtedly your neighbours are mortified and sometimes fighting 'fire' with 'understanding' might make you feel better and turn an unpleasant situation to your advantage. T...

Re: Roundup for sale?
Will did a deal back in 2010 with some Russians who, according to Will paid him a hefty deposit but they they never completed the deal. Will has been keen to find a buyer for many years (due to his health concerns) as he wanted (and maybe still does) to see it continue. The asking price at the time ...

Post Brexit - Medical Care
Following Mother Theresa's (May) announcement on Tuesday I read a newspaper article that suggested one of the areas many have overlooked is the 'availability' of reciprocal medical care for ex-pats living in other European countries. The article centred on France and Spain and went on to further sug...

Re: Tax on villa purchase
[quote="njc0607"]yes, the tax on purchasing is a killer... you should budget for around 9% of the purchase price, for tax and fees. We gave considerable thought to coming back - but calculated the cost of property ownership in Portugal or Spain would more than cover several holidays in equally appea...

Re: Tax on villa purchase
If you have an EU passport you can stay as long as you like. If you don't have one you need a visa to stay longer than 3 months. If, as is being reported in this weekend's UK press, Britain exits the EU and the single market - will all British expats require visas - regardless of the time spent in ...

Re: Strange Property Question
I would defer any decision until the result and repercussions of the referendum are clear. Buying a property in the Algarve is unlikely to provide you any capital growth or return on capital employed, it is a lifestyle choice and to enjoy it you must have enough free cash to visit regularly incurrin...
