Air Conditioning

Post by woppi »

We have booked a 2 bedroom apartment in Rocha Brava through Panorama Holidays for the last two weeks of June. The brochure does not explicitly state that the apartments have or have not air conditioning.

I gather from this site that most of the apartments do not. So what do they have? I presume there are fans. If so, are they noisey? Is air con a must have for the last two weeks of June or can one comfortably get by? Would we need to have windows open and fans on all night?

My concern is for my two kids (4yrs and 2 yrs). Will they get a good nights sleep?

Many thanks in advance,

Peter

Hi,
I have a place at r/brava and the owners there have been slow to upgrade there properties.
I think I can safely say the majority do not have air con. They will probably have fans but as you say they can be noisy and does not aid sleep!
No disrespect but why did you not clarify that at the time?

Rocha brava apartments are owned by individuals and it is up to them whether they install air con or supply fans. It would be best to check with panama holidays before you go as to what is supplied.

We were in the algarve last June (first 2 weeks) and the weather was very hot (similar to august) although it was more comfortable in the evening.

I would say you could get by without air con in the night.

Woppi - we have a villa that we use throughout July and August and have opted not to have air conditioning and as yet have not had any problems with the temparature.

Ceiling fans are normally only noisy if out of balance (try a bit of Blue tack to fix them), but we usually find an open window with a mossy net over it lets in a good breeze overnight. It is unlikely you would use air-con in the daytime since with doors always open your are trying to air-condition the Algarve!

Finally, is it just me or does anyone else suffer from 'cold symptoms' if they stay in air-conditioned places? I am always trying to turn it off and find maids always insist on turning it back on again - I have been known to remove a fuse to stop them dong this.

Yes Graham I always suffer with cold symptoms when in a air conditioned room for a long time. When I was in cvo last August the air conditioning was on all the time (not that i wanted it on but the rest of the family wanted it on) and i got a chest infection and heavy cold.

All we can say as aprtment owners that we get a better rental WITH aircon than those around us without.

Fans are noisy and more expensive to run

Modern aircon units can be pre programmed to a min temp and to switch off if left on or doors and windows opened causing a rapid rise in ambient temp.

You really only neeed aircon at night anyway.

AC can cause "cold like feelings" but if serviced regularly they will be no health issues. They do need a filter change annually, well most do.
Having it set too low is the main issue as you go from cold to hot too often as you go inside to out.
