Another alternative is a Post Office travelcard. You top up with Euros before you travel and then use the card like a debit card. We have just used this method and found it easier and widely acceptable in supermarkets and most restaurants.

Yes it was Monarch. Our previous experiences with them have been excellent, but not this time. I must say Easy Jet staff were brilliant. Not only were the Monarch emergency contacts unobtainable, their website also crashed,boucing back all correspondance.
