Does Chicken George come into the "good" category? The place up the hill with the outside barbecue, next to the phone box does a reasonable Piri Piri.VON VON wrote:What and miss eating in Silves at Valdemar watching the mix of locals and tourists. Always an experience but I wish people would not feed the dogs at the side of their tables. They are not strays too fat for that.
Guia is the chicken piri piri capital of the Algarve & according to legend restaurant Ramirez is where chicken piri piri was invented, during the summer there are ques going down the road, all Portuguese, & it's a big restaurant, 3 floors. There are several restaurants in Guia that serve virtually nothing but piri piri, no menus. Ramirez is our favourite, nice & spicy, succulent meat, crisp skin, yummy.

Don't know what its called but there's an excellent piri-piri restaurant almost directly opposite the entrance to Zoomarine.
I guess its quite 'traditional' and is very popular especially with the Portuguese. It's a little bit like a school dinner hall in that it has long tables which everyone shares. I think they only serve chicken piri-piri (never seen a menu) and it is really, really good!!

I did say according to legend, & it's probably the legend of the Ramirez restaurant but heyho what's the harm?Ellie wrote:Isn't chicken piri piri originally a dish from South Africa? Where the piri piri pepper comes from?
Seem to recall something we discussed on here way way back..
Though wikipedia write this -
"PIRI-PIRI - This is the hot West African sauce made from dried and soaked piri-piri chillies that is a staple condiment used to accompany many West African soups and stews. Though the origin of this sauce is probably Portuguese it's now well established as a classic West African condiment and is considered an essential accompaniment to any meal in many households.
Piri-piri Sauce is also the name given in Portugal to most hot sauces, done with piri-piri."
