Has anybody read the article about the Algarve in this weeks' Mail on Sunday "Sun and Ski" Travel supplement?
Do you think the report reflects the region? Do you think it would attract first time visitors to the area?

Incidently--on things Algarvian--wonder how many have read the new magazine ' Portugal' a bi-monthly--lots of interesting features in first edition--including informative feature on the new property tax legislation!
I was told of this mag. by Tricky--and Mads gave me the website

The Travel writer, starts off by saying that with a mixture of children and adults (10 in all) a villa holiday in the Algarve was the best choice, but then proceeds to slag the whole holiday!.
As I have considerable experience of Travel writers in my line of work,
most of them don't pay for their trips and I get the feeling that this lady
is more used to 'slumming' it in the Madives or Mauritius or five star villas in the South of France (of which she probably never pays for either)
Whilst I have never stayed in Sao Rapheal (never heard of it either)
Travel writers get me so mad because most of them can't see what is in front of them - only the five star commercialism that they are used to.
AND! if my child persisted in asking me ' When are we going on holiday'
even on the way back!! its the last holiday he'd be going on!
The whole article was badly written in my opinion and completely contradictory with the opening paragraph about how nice it is in the Algarve.
Oh and the bit about Mobile phone's on the beach- The lady ought to spend a few days in Dubai or the Caribbean
mind you she probably has!

I haven't read this week's MoS yet (been out walking & enjoying a glass or two of the amber nectar). However, I posted this on another topic last week as it seems to redress the balance. Basically, the article painted the Algarve in a very good light. Regards to all in CVO>

Excellent article in the travel supplement of 'The Times' (10/01/04) regarding the Algarve as part of the 'run up' to Euro 2004 and whilst CVO isn't mentioned it mentions ".......the wonderful climate and beautiful coastline of long beaches washed by the Atlantic tide and backed by ochre cliffs........". Whilst only a few matches are being played at Loule' many of the teams (including Germany & Holland) & the world media will be based at Algarve hotels - apparently England are making do with a 4* near Lisbon!
No doubt the Algarve will benefit from the publicity it receives during the tournament.

Reading newspaper a few months ago...might have been in Cvo at the time..it said that England team's hotel was in Centre of Lisbon!!!! They were very concerned about this because of obvious 'temptations' 
if that is the right word due to bars in immediate vicinity and noise disturbance-think they meant the traffic but it could be the team and not the locals

Best Buy of the week todays Sunday Express magazine - SEGADA RIBATEJO 2002 Oddbins £ 4.99.... According to the wine expert, Portugal is making some of the best reds, describes this as a beauty based on the Trincadeira grape, superb variety etc... and says you wont get a better wine for under a fiver

It was thinking about your recent post referring to the Times article that set me thinking about posting this one. Obviously at that time you were answering to what I had reported that I had read on the Holiday Truths website and to be honest first impressions on seeing the article in today's MoS was one of delight in that I truly believed it would counter the Holiday Truths website and back up what you had written was the gist of the Times report however it wasn't like that at all as Tricky has mentioned.
This is my view:-
Despite being a "sales pitch" (which is afterall how they get the holidays for free!) it really did very little to sell the Algarve and didn particularly put Villaplus in a good light (despite them no doubt funding the whole shabang).
It talked in terms of hordes of UK tourists with their love of Eastenders, it continues in the vein of endless construction sites, kids counting the cranes rather than the donkeys, etc. It was fairly cleverly framed in so far that whilst it advocated holidaying on the Algarve, every sentence contained a barely veiled reference to something most people would consider a negative.
I basically posted the above question without giving my views to ascertain whether others saw it as the silent assassination that I did - reassuringly for me that appears to be case but what hope the tourst dependant Algarve.
