2nd hand shops options

Hi everyone

I have been living in the algarve for about 3 years now and yet I haven't made it into a second hand shop. However I have friends moving into my local town (silves) and they need to kit out their apartment and I didn't have a clue where to tell them where to go.

I was hoping some of my fellow forum members would be able to suggest some 2nd hand furniture shops that are ideally within 25 minutes of silves for furniture items such as sofas, table and chairs, coffee tables etc.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

Morning. The only second hand shops I've come across are the charity shops in Monte Carvoeiro and in Silves (although my last visit there was a couple of years ago). The former is run I think by ex-pats for various animal welfare charities, and the latter as I recall was perhaps a Portuguese religious charity. Both of course are more the books and clothing end of the market, but it might be worth approaching them as they may have contacts - I imagine they themselves have people wishing to donate furniture etc.
Otherwise, the various free papers often seem to have a small ads section which would include the sort of stuff your friend is looking for. I believe there are also now one or two car boot sales around - possibly also advertised in the free sheets. No doubt another poster will have more details of these.

There's another charity shop on the " out" road, about 50 meters from the end, on left.....have often seen sofas in there. There's another in Lagoa : coming from Faro direction, branch right and drive about half a mile. It's on the right, by a bakers and a vets! They often have bookcases and some larger items.

There are also a number of Portuguese charities that seek to rehabilitate addicts. Not only do they sell second-hand furniture and goods, but they also do reasonably-priced odd-job work and moving/delivery men. I've been to the 'Despertar' shop in Portimao and it's huge and has a lot of furniture, but a lot of it is not what I'd call saleable condition- I hope you/your friend are not put off by first impressions, because you can sometimes find quality goods, but I'm just warning you that you may have to make an effort to look. Also, I don't know what style your friend goes in for, but a lot of it is....shall we say, "dated". Just saying, Ikea it's not. You can see some of their stock online here:

There is one on the roundabout by the market in Lagoa that has a large selection of furniture.

There's a large 2nd hand furniture shop off the round-about opposite the bullring in Lagoa (next to the Fatacil) also the Donkey Sanctuary shop in Lagoa next to SolVet has furniture in sometimes & the Resident, Portugal News, etc., have items/furniture for sale sections.

I know it's a bit away, but there are a couple of shops in Loule, just off the town centre roundabout.

I am a regular at the charity shops and there seems to be a lack of furniture of late - apart from a sofa I saw in the charity shop recently (last 2 weeks) that was really worn.

Thanks for the heads up on this great shop do you know where abouts it is (both stores)? as they seem to have some good things and you could always re-paint them.

No I don't expect ikea standards and my friends would prefer modern or something that they could tart up as I am in my 20's and my friends are in their early 30s.

Thanks I did have a look but quite a bit of it is really old auctions so I doubt it will still be available!!!
