Swimming in the sea

Come on then, who's swimming in the sea. Is it warm or freeeezing. Last year it was strangly warm and we had the whole family in.

It's freezing. Kids still went in though!

Well it was warmer in May & June than in July when brass monkeys would definitely have steered well clear, but it's getting warmer again now. We love swimming in the sea you have to be careful on some beaches because of the shelving & strong undertow, my son was at praia do Sao Raphael the other day & he said the waves were enourmous & the undertow really strong, some people were struggling to get out, but he & his friends loved it. I prefer a gentler beach.

My son got stung by a spider fish on Carvoeiro beach which caused some distress. Shoes in the water became a necessity after that!

Weaver fish ar very common in the sandy Algarve beaches as they are in the UK one of the suggested cures is to " pee " on the infected area or bathe with hot water,
One the poisionous spines are removed it is used can be in fish soup amd similar dishes.

Pee is for jellyfish. The way the RNLI beach guys treat weaver fish stings is to soak in as hot water as you can bear for 15 to 30 minutes

The very lovely lifeguards got him a bucket of hot water with bleach in it from one of the neighbouring restaurants. After walking around for a bit, he was back to normal. It was a story to tell his friends!

What about carvoeiro beach? is it quite safe to swim there? when we were over we went to bengil beach and it was very rough so i didnt go in. im not a great swimmer so i dont go far but i quite fancy going in with my body board this time lol

I'm sorry I don't know about Carvoeiro beach we never go there but I'm sure other members will be able to tell you, my son was there the other day & he said it was really busy, lots of families so I would think that it must be ok, he didn't say otherwise. The thing is the beaches can change constantly depending on the tides & the weather one of the beaches we used to go to a lot over the last 2 - 3 years had developed quite a steep shelf this year so we aren't using it for now.

cheers blue i dont go far in anyway, just a paddle really. im a crap swimmer so i better start practicing!! the only sea ive been in properly was one in florida last year, i had good fun with my body board but the whole time i was worried a shark was gonna come and have a munch at me lol!

Safest place to swim near Carvoeiro is the beach at Ferragudo
No waves and you can also watch the many boats coming in and out of the harbour. Also Very safe for children and a few good restaurants.
