Slightly off topic: I see this as the 'official' topic, mainly because of Steen's contributions. So please, all members that have something to add to the subject, post it here where it seems the more 'official' and relevant information can be found. It's a pain having to access three separate topics to get information relating to one subject.

Back on topic: Do you know what car hire company ECH were referring to? We pick up our ECH hire car 11 December and as yet do not know what to expect.

Sorry no, but give them a quick call. I have always found them very helpfull, so much so the information they are providing is on the back of an email I sent them and they are keeping me up to date as they get the information. Good PR that other could follow.

When I asked [at the Post Office] if they sold the transponders required for Portuguese registered cars here I was told that they did but could not until next week. It turns out that they did have some but had already sold out and were hoping for a new delivery the next week.

“You must have had quite a rush on for them,” I said.

I think you will find that it is 4.05 for the trip.

If you exit at Alcantirhila is it €2.95 I normally exit there anyway as I find it's shorter, especially if you use this turnoff as you enter Lagoa?

It seems the the Portuguese Car Rental Association (ARAC) is nearing an agreement with the authorities on the tolls.

The solution being discussed is a vignette for rental cars allowing free traffic on motorways at a fixed price per 6 month period.

Provided a solution is agreed ARAC will decide the price to be charged by car rental companies.

As a result the scheduled start of charging tolls on December 8th could be pushed until January 2012 in order for the technicalities to be sorted.

So does that mean the car rental companies will include in their car hire charges the fixed rate to be agreed , regardless of whether customers use the A22 or not on their visit. or am I mis-understanding your post?

I hope this works out. I am out next week for a few days and was going to use the A22 as a 'guinea pig' run for later rentals (this time of year highly unlikely to use the motorway more than twice - from and to the airport)


what the Portuguese authorites do not want to do is alienate tourists, and nothing will annoy a tourist more than a charge appearing on their credit card a month after they return home.
