We left at Alcantrilha which we calculated cost 3.95 and I have just left the Post Office (23 minute wait!) and it cost 3.26! It look as if we have to pay tax on tax!

I think you mean the calculated cost would be 2.95
The extra amount (0.31) you had to pay was costs for post-payment I suppose?

Hi,

This was an update I gave on one of the other posts on this subject. Awaiting futher update from ECH.
Hi,

The latest I have from ECH. Not the full picture but they will keep me informed as soon as they have more details.

"Charges will be implemented from the 8th December. A partnership has been created between Via Verde and Unicre, who deal with all credit card transactions in Portugal. There will be a specific contract between clients and car rental suppliers so clients details can be passed over to Via Verde using a secure database/website and charged directly for use of the toll roads by Via Verde.

This does mean that it will be essential for customers to have a credit card when renting a vehicle in Portugal in the future.

This partnership will take a little bit of time to set up, so in the meantime, car hire suppliers have their own rules to deal with this. One of the car hire suppliers we use has detailed the following:

Clients will be informed that a road toll is payable.
The customer will have to sign a contract informing them of their responsibility of this road toll or any other traffic fines during their hire.
A small administration fee will be charged to the customer to pay for the expenses incurred for identifying the driver details for Via Verde."

Until 1st Jan we the drivers will be responsible, from 1st Jan -30th June, the Hire companies will collect from our credit cards,
From 1st July ( proposed ) hire cars will pay an annual charge which will be reflected in a rental premium passed on to us the hirer motorway user or not.

Scource , posting on ExpatsFocus ( portugal thread ).

I popped over for a couple of days over the weekend, and the taxi driver refused to use the A22, so we used the N125 for both trips. Quite a scary road really, and I would have preferred to have paid the difference in toll fee to have had a more comfortable journey. Apparently, the camera's have been shot at quite extensively by disgruntled residents, who have also been pinching number plates to disguise their identity!
