Useless information!!

Post by april »

In Shakespeares times matresses were secured to bed posts by ropes. Tightening the ropes made a firmer matress- hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight" !! What useless information do you know ?

Don't think so Tiko, since the average rat weighs in total between 7 and 16 oz

Hi ellie-yes thats what i meant. Now here's another. In Old England , ale was served in pints and quarts./ When people became unruly the bartender would shout 'mind your own pints and quarts and settle down' and thats where 'mind your p's and q's ' came from!

There is a phrase in the Old West.

"I'll bet my Bottom Dollar"

It ment that you bet your whole stack of poker chips.

"Good night, sleep tight," means sleep all night. The usage of the term tight is the same as in water tight or air tight, i.e. secured. In this case, sleep tight means fastened or secured in sleep.

Minding your p's and q's is from typesetting. Lead type was (and still is for letterpresses) stored in boxes. The lowercase p and q were easy to mix up. Remember that typesetters are reading the letters backwards, and they worked fast. So minding your p's and q's was to be careful when pulling the letters from the case.
