New here! Ola!

Post by DrZeus »

Bom dia!

I just found this site this morning -- nice to see some English-speaking forums for people in the Algarve! My name is John and I am from Seattle, WA, USA. We've been living in Faro for about 4 months. My wife is Portuguese (from Faro) and after 10 years of marriage, decided to give it a go here. So far, it's been wonderful! Faro has it's good and bad, of course...and after visiting some of the surrounding towns I wonder if we shouldn't have settled someplace else. But, here we are! :)

I am a Web Developer by trade, and I continue to do some work for a few clients in the U.S., but I also teach English to Portuguese children and am in the process of starting my own coffee company. Anybody else here with a passion for the coffee bean? I'm still trying to find a coffeeshop in Faro (or anywhere close by) that really understands how to prepare a good shot of espresso. :D We have a 6 year-old boy who will be starting first grade in the Fall. His Portuguese is coming along quite well, while mine is...well...mine isn't. Hopefully with time it will, but I'm finding it to be a rather difficult language to learn.

Anyway, just wanted to briefly introduce myself...

Ola John and welcome to Portugal. And yes, its nice to see an English speaking forum for people in Algarve. But alas we sometimes wonder of the contributions made by the self-righteous ninnies, most of whom don’t actually live here, so cant help themselves, poor lambs.

well, digger, ( ).. this is a site, based on a town, that is for tourists..so what do you expect? i think there are only 3 or 4 (including the good doctor) who are actual residents of portugal on this site... the question is: do they drink coffee? and where can they get the good stuff?...like i said, doc, welcome to the party. :D ...cowboy. (seriously, how do you rate, good or bad, ethiopian coffee beans?)

Hello John

I brought a huge stash of the brown stuff over last xmas stored it in my privete locker in my villa and when i returned in May it was like a brick! Now have had those little thin radiators put in problem solved. Alas can only visit CVO 3/4 times a year and usually i am in holiday mode and so only drink Sagres!

I am trying to get my kids to stop speaking English!

Welcome to the site :D

yes --Id like to add my welcome to Dr Zeus---and hope you will be a regular contributor.
i only drink coffee when Im in Portugal -it just doesnt taste the same here in UK --perhaps it isnt the right atmosphere.
Whats the best coffee youve ever tasted ?
Maybe Cowboy can tell us, like you hes American and probably the experts -it being your national beverage.
Dont most folk say its "Blue mountain" --is that Jamaican?
Im sure youll soon become proficient in the language having a Portuguese wife. To my shame -I let mine go a bit --but I do pick up when Im there on hols-well a little anyway.
Welcome aboard CVO& Boa sorte!

Hello again. Thanks for the the replies. :)

My opinion of Ethiopian? Well, historically speaking, it's considered the world's first coffee...the original (the word "coffee" comes from a location in Ethiopia named "Kaffa.") Generally, Ethiopian coffee is good (Harrar being the best, in my opinion) but of course there are types that I don't particularly like (ie: Yirgacheffe, in particular, has too much of a flowery taste for me). I also like Sidama, being naturally sweet, and Limu, having a rather spicy flavor to it.

Blue Mountain is 100% Jamaican, and it isn't the name Americans give to coffee in general. It used to be, after WWII, that most Americans believed coffee came pre-ground in a can with name Folgers or Hills Brothers on it. Some time around the early 90's however, the U.S. has awakened to a better understanding of what coffee actually tastes like -- this has kick-started the espresso craze that continues today. Being from Seattle, I've seen the full brunt of it. :) From what I understand, most of those in the UK drink their coffee as an instant beverage. Is that right? Sounds almost as bad as instant tea or eating at McDonalds.

By the way, we visited Silves and Carvoeira yesterday for the first time. We were just passing time before the fair in Lagoa started, really, so we weren't able to see too much. We walked along the main avenue in Carvoeira, up the hill to the church, then climbed around those rocks next to the water (my 6 year-old son loved it!). Saw the castle in Silves, too.

The folk festival is going on in Faro...I went last night, and will go again tonight. Not very big as far as booths go, but the stage shows are excellent!

I shouldn't have said that about ninnies who don't live here, it wasn't aimed at you or anyone in particular. I wanted to relate to the good doctor as we seem to have things in common like we do live here and we're coffee lovers with Portuguese wives. But I guess I felt a little irritated or confused after reading "cvo's worst". It won't happen again.

Doc, yes most people in the UK drink instant coffee (Nescafe). However, in London especially, coffee shops are opening everywhere, even traditional pubs are closing down and reopening as coffee shops. They have names like Starbucks and The Seattle Coffee Co.. American franchises I think, just like McDonalds.

coffee

Sorry for spelling name wrong before--Dr Zeus--
yes we are a nation of tea drinkers as i believe are the Germans---
and Digger is correct about most of ours being"instant" stuff --and nowhere near the "real"thing!
But--we do have an excellent market stall in Boston (Lincolnshire UK --not New England!)--that sells all types --the "Aroma" just draws you there to buy---wonderful stuff!
Afraid I cant drink it dark& strong --like a bica--I prefer the"namby pamby" cafe com leite!
They used to have a wonderful coffee bean shop in City of London close to where I worked --along Moorgate----we'd buy the beans and use coffee grinder at the office to make the real McCoy!

Coffee

Post by Admiral »

At the risk of incurring somebody's wrath for going off topic, the comments on coffee reminded me of a story my father related:
He was in charge of a British Army field kitchen in Southampton during WWII, set up to give sustenance to GIs arriving on troop ships for the preparations for the Normandy Invasion. The troops were disembarking and assembling before going off to their billets. There was a large vat of English coffee ready for sampling. For those of you who remember this was the army's version of Camp coffee, an interesting coffee essence with the consistency of tar to which you added hot water. The first GI down the gangplank took a cup, filled it from the vat, took a swig and exclaimed, "No wonder you Limeys drink tea!!".
