Christmas Traditions

Getting my comeuppance!
Some years back--when I worked in the City(London of course)---it was a few weeks before Christmas that I "went off" meat and instead ate only varieties of fish for main meal.
Well-I must have gone on and on ad infinitum, spouting on about how much healthier fish was --blah blah blah, how it was much tastier and not so fatteningetc.
When I turned up for work the last day before Xmas break,my desk was piled with colourfully wrapped gifts from office mates(worked in huge office!).I eagerly set to work opening them--usual things we bought each other--perfume--toiletries--make-up etc --but at the bottom was an intrigueing beautifully wrapped long shape.I opened it up to discover some newspaper and inside---with glassy eye staring up at me--a long scaly raw bloater(herring)
I looked up and glanced round.Suddenly everyone had their eyes down totally engrossed in their books!
I never did discover which one or more did it--but I had to laugh at it-- and needless to say--I never mentioned the dreaded word "fish" to them again
and I think they all breathed a sigh of relief when I finally went back to eating meat
Oh by the way.I actually took the fish home with me on the bus and my Mum cooked and ate it for her tea! You see, she' been brought up on the old saying
"Waste not--want not!"

Guest you remind me of another sad story, my dad was bought up by an aunt and uncle as both his parents died young, as well as him they had a daughter of their own. My dad kept rabbits in a pen in the garden essentially as pets although they did put the odd meal on the table as well - one day in November he came home to find them all gone, his adoptive father told him they had escaped.
Christmas morning dawned with his adoptive sister being presented with a brand new rabbit fur coat
and dad . . . well he got a yoyo!

The "Christmas season" is lovely and I love it. I left my story just to remind anyone who bothers to read through, that not everyone has a meryy Christmas. As we are all sitting with family and friends spare a thought for the less fortunate, and over the next year do something to help make this world a better place, even if it is just buying Christmas cards from a charity, it all helps.
One Xmas tradition that I won't be doing this year is visiting CVO, usually come out on boxing day with my whole family (wife, three kids, mum & dad and sister and brother). I am "doing" dinner this year as the other jammy buggers are still going on the 26th.
Last new years eve was spent in O Cantinho, bloody brilliant ! They made us very very welome. At midnight the raisins were handed out and we all thought we had to throw them at each other instead of eating them and making a wish! That was the first time I actually felt like a local.
