What has happened ?

Red, Point taken and apologies for offending you and probably many others.
It was so incensed by the scruffiness of the town and beaches, maybe it was because October is classed as out of season, but it didn't seem like the CVO I know and love and have dreamt about spending my retirement there.
I saw a couple of families there with no respect for other holidaymakers, restaurant owners etc and at one point I felt embarrassed to be English.
Apologies again.

Oh Dear!
Guest!--If you had read my posting properly --you would have seen that I said My own kids were allowed free expression with their artistic efforts in "our home" --and not to vandalize" someone elses'"---ok -I admit I was being a littl frivolous in some of my remarks--but I still maintain that absolute cleanliness takes away character --I dont mind a little bit of sleaze at all 
--Of course I wouldnt want kids splashing paint willy nilly on my red brick walls--but--if I saw some attempting this ---I would invite them to try out their artistry somewhere more suitable--provide them with the materials--call me stupid if you if you like--so what--you wont change me Call me naive---but give kids more time--talk to them--
I go along with Gambrinus and Cowboy on this one-though Im sure they dont agree with all I say
As for Carvoeiro--for me it still has all its charm--so what if it gets a little seedy at times--for me carving out great swathes of countryside is "vandalism" --with ever more great villas and buildings "littering" the rural areas --they are the "eye sores"
I admit my politics are to the left--but as Ive re-read my recent postings --could I be in danger of becoming an--anarchist

Just to add--that I agree with Sharon--about overheard remarks--we also heard these --particularly in restaurants --IE "rotten foreign food" and being horrible to the people waiting on them. Heard one Brit lot complaining "after" the'd eaten most of it embarrasing the waitress with their offensive remarks _I was glad to hear her reply --that if they'd told her in the first place--then she would have replaced the meal-she was courteous and friendly -that night I felt ashamed of my fellow countryfolk
People can be "litter" too

Depends what you mean by positive Red----not thinking of slapping these young graffiti kids in irons are you
And while Im at it--just like to say that I think a previous "Guest" was totally out of order in "naming" the person they thought responsible--you have to be very careful about this --could find yourself with a legal problem
Gambrinus --the subject of "travellers"--you speak of them leaving rubbish/litter etc behind and the smell of "piss"--are there not facilities made available for their use?
I had quite a bit of contact with these"travellers" in my time there and mostly found them friendly, helpful people--my involvement with them told on the Corner--where they helped me at garden job--was just one incident.
I found them charming and courteous --and I do feel peeved at them being "generalised" in this way. They seemed happy and their kids healthy(from my own experience) --and Id uphold their right for them to continue to live the way they wish. After all, theres plenty of people in houses-with all facilities available--who are grotty and neglect their kids--just ask our social services
In London-I had men use my garden as a "loo" to piss in--when they staggered out of the local pub--theres good and bad everywhere

My Great grandparents were gypsies and the family was poor but I was taught the difference between right and wrong as I taught my kids at a very young age!!!
As for sticking the kids legs in irons? No, I'd get the little shit to clean up his mess, he'd soon think twice then. Or should he be sent on holiday at taxpayers expense to make him see the error of his ways? He should count himself lucky living in Cvo!
Or am I meant to have sympathy for some horrible tearaways here who

Don't you realise that it it is not these (young) people's fault if they transgress.
It is modern society which has made them the way they are. Rather than chastising them for doing these things, we should be asking 'what have we done wrong that made you do these things', and then we should try to change to accomodate them, so that they will be more content.
In the alternative parable of the good samaritan the social worker saw the thieves as the real victims.
Personally however, a good boot in the bollocks would be a worthy and more effective solution

Well then Red--regarding the "travellers"/Gypsies---My husbands great grandparents were Romanys and they too were very poor-but I was simply stating that I would uphold the right for these people to live the way they chose. Lets at least learn "some " lessons from past history--middle of last century-when people were "done away with" simply because they looked and lived different--lets not go down that path again--its a constant danger --a few bigoted careless remarks-------------

So the social worker thinks a good kick up the bollocks is the answer to all juvenile problems. I had children who are now all grown up with kids of their own, and never laid a finger on them, the answer, give them time, encouragement and most of all, love. I was born in what was probably the roughest area in London, Bermondsey, I was not given love or time. I vowed I would never lay a hand on my children nor did I. Leave the kids alone and go for those who are the real cuprits, the parents, or the absent ones,they have been getting away with neglecting their responsibilities for years,give the fathers a kick up the bollocks and make them pay for damage,drag them though the courts and name them. Children only learn by example, teach them how to behave not by waving a belt under their nose but by being,(dare I say it),nice. And,speaking personally, I would suggest a kick up the arse for our dedicated socal worker

Social worker, you really hit the nail on the head so poignantly with such a simple observation and such a simple solution. I chuckled for minutes....
Sharon, glad you also laughed, and I hope it'll change your mind about re-visiting CVO. Yes, there's a lot of muck and graffiti, but its the same the world over - CVO also has charm, great restaurants, extremely friendly people and a warm atmosphere and climate.
Lets get it all into perspective..... and cut off the right hands of anyone who defaces the walls and behead anyone who disagrees with me

Confession time - I was 'social worker', and was in Schipol airport with time to spare, so I posted without trying to log on.
My comments were indeed slightly 'tongue in cheek', but yet with a certain amount of truth.
Angryman, compared with where I live, you were born in paradise.
I suspect you don't know the meaning of violence, except in a purely superficial physical sense .
Being caught writing grafitti anywhere will normally get you a rebuke, here you could lose your knees because of it's normal intense sectarian overtones. So a kick in the bollocks could be a luxury
When the UK government released hundreds of terrorists over here in an insane act of appeasement their leaders portrayed the same terrorists as 'the real victims of our conflict'. The actual victims of their despicable acts were a mere consequence of their victimisation, and therefore not their problem. Tomorrow a woman will be buried who was killed because her 'crime' was that she comforted a dying British soldier. Her body lay in a hidden grave for 30 years. Her killers are now supposedly pillars of society, and immune from prosecution
I too have grown up children, and it took all my considerable patient efforts, over many years, to instill in them the virtues that we are all God's children. Fortunately I succeeded and as a result I have to now live with the considerable risks associated over here with mixed religious marriages. It would have been so much easier to adopt a ghetto approach.
So, if a kick in the arse for me is what you think is appropriate, then feel free to swing your boot. You are the least of my problems
