Do you think its the sun that the football fans in Albuferia are not used too!
being stuck in those stadiums all winter, and then let out ?.
I too am ashamed to be british at the moment and dread the TV news
bringing yet another story about the hooligans in Portugal.
The worst aspect of it, is the image it is giving of the Algarve to people all over Europe, Yes we know its the british who are causing it, but it gives the impression that the Algarve is commercialised and full of lager louts.
The number of foreign tourists to Europe in the past two years has decreased because of the treat of terrorism, Portugal badly needs a boost, unfortunately it looks like Euro 2004 is not going to do it.

Whilst not wanting to defent the idiots in Albufeira in any way I was very pleased to see that there was not trouble at the actual match in Lisbon, and this is something that we should thank all the authorities and real fans for.

It seems to me that if you stick a large number of young men in any location and poor in alcohol then trouble is going to follow. I would be interested to know how many people are usually arrested in Albufeira for drunken behaviour during a non-football week.

I think the international press are always looking for any kind of story that links bad behaviour to football fans (and most know that I am definitely not one of those), and maybe the incidents should be taken in a wider context.

I personally an not ashamed to be English. I have no doubt that the Portuguese, and for that matter any European country, has an element that they do not wish to be part of their society, and as such are intelligent enough not to realise that there is good and bad in every nation.

I am sure that there will be more 'incidents' in the Algarve given the number of idiots staying there, but hopefully the matches themselves will be trouble free, showing that the English, in particular the police and the FA, take the issue extremely seriously.

Pictures shown about English Hools behaving like Barbarians give us a good idea about what is going on in the English Society. There is a huge difference betwenn the English that came to the Algarve some decades ago and the pack that is flying in today.

Increase fares and booze prices to keep this rubbish away. Noone needs them.

I feel I should labour the point somewhat. If the patronizing folk who scribe on this page would care to consult their British passports, they will see that there is no such nationality as English, Welsh, Northern Irish or Scots (and even less, Scottish!). I'm afraid that we will be viewed and judged collectively by international public opinion as British, hard as that may be for "softy southerners" to understand when London was systematically dismantled by hoards of marauding folk from north of the Cheviots on their way to Wembley for the annual confrontation.

Overnight there have been further disturbances by certain vile football "supporters" who certainly do not deserve to be allowed back into the UK, ANY part of the UK, when they try and return home. They are not wanted in the UK any more than they are in any part of mainland Europe, and yes, Digger, I am not ashamed to say that I would prefer to see the troublemakers shot. In that way, there will always be a corner of a Portuguese field that is forever Britain!

I noticed a comment about taking hooligans passports away, all "known" hooligans have been kept well away by British police (or so we are lead to believe from papers and tv). On the Portuuese news tonight there was an interview with an English man, I only caught the last bit so I don't know who he was. He said that all trouble makers arrested Tuesday night are first offenders except one who has been arrested for being drunk in a football stadium in England. How could they know that these "tourists" were going to trash Albufeira on Monday and Tuesday (yes it happened last night) night?
In the Correio da Manha today it says that Fifa don't think what happened was anything to do with the football, on the next page is an interview with one of the fighters saying they didn't want any trouble they just came to see the football, think Fifa got it wrong

When they were filming the trouble there was one English lad covered in blood trying to cover his face and saying "Don't film me, don't film me" so it's O.K to cause thousands of euros worth of damage but please don't film them

After the rsult of the England France game a few supporters decided to smash Piu's terrace furniture, nice lot aren't they?

….ok the limey…shoot them if you must…..see if I care!!..…but you must tell us how…do you shoot to kill, maim for life or is it just a bit of leadshot in the backside……whatever…...to me, people who state stuff like: “there will always be a corner of a Portuguese field that is forever Britain!” are really no different to those who march through town chanting: “England, England”………..

I have read all the comments on these pages and have to put my two pennyworth in. How dare the Scottish revile "English Football Hooligans" abroad and say that they only cause trouble at home in Scotland. What about the Mexico World Cup The Scottish hooligan element were well in evidence and mindless thuggery is not an English only preserve. I dont mean to excuse the so called English Fans quite the opposite. But I also do not believe that they are Football Fans just drunken louts.I expect that if they were ask in court How many Euro 2004 football matches they had tickets for the answer would be a resounding NONE. They are just in Portugal on holiday this year because they want be there,just to say we were there. Normally they would be in IBIZA or the Greek Islands and as far as I am concerned they should have stayed there!
KEEP THE HOOLIGANS AND LOUTS FROM ANY COUNTRY OUT OF THE ALGARVE. Its a family holiday desination not the 'Club Mecca' of the Med and I for one hope it never is..

For what its worth i don,t think any of you should be ashamed to be english..the rest of the world is full of people who are clued in enough to realise that the "ellies".."maddis"and the rest of you decent folk have no more in common with these headcases then i have with a pit bull terrier....the prisons of every country are full of these nutters...your headers are just a bit more high profile.

800 years of grinding the irish into the dirt ...taking our language..our religan..our culture.. driving us of our land ..genaside..corableedinatinn street and what are yis ashamed of ..a bit of a row in portugal yir a gas crowd...........i,m only kiddin.

Well said Suzi and Gerry, I totaly agree, every country has its own 'brand' of hooligans, ours just seems to be louder and more high profile than others, glad to see that 11 have now been deported from Portugal and one sent to jail for 2 years for being the gang leader. As said by Suzi, these louts are the troublemakers who go to places like Spain and Germany etc when footie games are on just to cause trouble, not to see the matches.
Having a hubby who is half Irish (with a name like Michael Collins!!!) the end bit made me laugh Gerry, by the way, how is the head?

We returned to England last Saturday (12th) after a glorious week in Carvoeiro

. We didn't see any signs of Football "Fans" until Thursday of last week when about 40 (I think Dutch) lads checked into Paraiso Country Club where we were staying. When we went down into the town for drinks and a meal that night, we were amazed at the number of groups of English lads that had arrived

- they were already by then loud and obnoxious and we were quite relieved that we were going home on Saturday. They were being quite rude to bar staff that we had had a laugh and a joke with through the week and regarded as friends.

I was quite embarassed to be around them and hope that there isn't any bother in Carvoeiro because we would rather like to return at some point in the future.

(By the way, unlike the English, the Dutch [all 40 odd of them] didn't cause any trouble at the Country Club while we were there)

Speaking of the irish, two nights ago an ambulance drove into Praia da Rocha to go and pick up a pacient. They left the ambulance to attend to the sick person and an irish bloke got in the ambulance and drove off. He was stopped and detained a short while afterwards - I imagine that anybody relying on a potencially life-saving ambulance would probably be more than pissed off if some moron decided to drive off with it.
