while this will affect all ex pats it will have a much bigger impact on the likes of Hemingways, Blackstove, Mungos etc who reply on Sky for premier league football etc. Interesting to see what action they take.
[quote - EMM -The national PT channels also broadcast some progs in english with PT subtitles. We probably watch at least 40% of our TV on Cabo Visao.
There is a business opportunity for the PT cable networks to take over transmission of the popular UK networks as they have the power and location for mega dishes. It would not be free but I believe that the take up would be substantial.
I agree, If Cabo Visao were allowed to transmit basically the main uk channels BBC/ITV/CH4 -perhaps even RTE) and provided they had a reasonable charge I think this could be a runner. Sky sports and movie channels could be extra if required. I assume our 1.4 dishes would be more than capable of receiving this signal or would you require one of those little dishes? I imagine that with number of expats living in Spain, Portugal, Algarve, etc that there is a large market waiting to be tapped.

I suppose only time will tell but would it be possible to erect a large community dishes (3m  ) and distribute supply from there.? (not necessarily of rooftops, might be better situated at ground level - but fenced off)

I have 4 digital Portuguese channels but notice that there are a lot more than this available - assume Cabo Visao?

WIth more sats due to go online next year there are now suggestions that eventually most UK channels will be lost
Until we know what is going to happen to the encrypted broadcasts ( SKY ) I would not consider a larger dish or any new equipment until this is resolved. Report on Portugal Expats that a 2.4mtr dish did not help reception.

Where are the professionals, those who rely on local property owners for business ?. What have they got to say.

PT have just been today and upgraded us to cable, they supplied an HD Meo box which does the same job as Sky plus and a cable wireless router. We now get hundreds of channels, more mbps and didn't cost one cent, a completely free upgrade.

this is from the link provided by EMM on his first post on this topic

Astra 2E is expected to launch next year and provide more UK spot beam capacity with a coverage area similar to the smaller footprint area of Astra 2F. It may provide a complete replacement for Astra 1N, which can then be moved to its final destination of 19.2 degrees East serving continental Europe.

is Astra 1N moving to 19.2 degrees a get out of jail card?

We have a second dish/receiver for our German/Dutch guests. I don't know what satellite it uses but someone has suggested it may send a dual audio stream and it could be possible to get it to speak English if the original soundtrack allows it.

As usual the english language Algarve news sources can be relied on for innacurate reporting.
The news report on ALGARVE DAILY NEWS refers ro FREEVIEW whcih anyone wiyj half a brain cell knows cannot be received in Portugal or anywhere outside if the UK.

I am not sure that they bother to do that.

This subject has been discussed for some time ( months ) on various forums but it is only this week ( yesterday and today ) that the Portugal News, Algarve Resident and Algarve Daily News caught up with the story.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the revenues from advertisers in the SAT business who are now admitting that they DO NOT now what is going to happen.

The Algarve Resident suggests that internet TV may not be practical and suggest looking at the PT cable and Sat providers such as Meo and Zon as alternatives.

My emails to Mark at Skyrealm are still coming back undelivered! Maybe he's been getting so much flack, he's disabled it.

If you read all the various reports, they are not yet able to give you any advice, nor should you take any until well into next year when changes are completed and the next sat launched.

see www.algarveresident.com www.portugalnews.com and www.algarvedailynews.com

Hold on to your money, any spent now could be a waste.

If one reads the press reports and information, it has nothing to do with Dish Size. NO dish will pick up Sky transmissions as the Foot print will not reach southern Portugal and Spain.
As Emm recently posted this is a fantastic opportunity for the present TV Providers here in Portugal to make some money, but---will they get their fingers out? It looks like the loss of programmes will happen sooner rather than later. Could be an interesting Christmas viewing!
