I still can't see how this will work correctly. Is it realistic for the car rental compamies when providing credit card details to the CTT to provide details of the actual time that the vehicle was rented and returned (especially as some cars are returned unattended out of hours)?

Will customers be given the choice to not have a transponder if they do not intend to use the motorway?

Many peoples' original reaction was that the tolls alone were not unreasonable but when you add perhaps €18.40 on top of the tolls then a return trip via the motorway becomes an expensive choice.

My bet would be that by the time the 2012 summer season is out of the way there will have been sufficient displeasure expressed by the renting public at the level of this charge that the more enterprising companies will reduce or eliminate the rental charge for the transponder, and that this will become an expected (inclusive) feature of a rental car. The Portugal News article states that it's optional, which will give the regular visitor the option to use their own transponder which can be bought for 27,50€ or pay cash at the post office etc as now or avoid the motorways completely.

Driving probably averaged around 50 km per hour with a few slower and a few faster patches. journey took just over 1 hour on both occasions. Found it much easier on petrol too, though that may have been down to the car.

I used the motorway on previous visit in December on both journeys and nothing yet. Car hire company are pretty sure there won't be.

regretfully never noticed any roadside enhancements on either journey in Feby
There were 5 on duty yesterday  What I cant work out, is where do they do their "work"??? Maybe that font of all knowledge, Tricky, can enlighten me? :D
Interested, are you Bruce? Does Julia know about this?

arrived Saturday 14th around 10am, used the 125, approx 1 hour to cvo (wet and windy and only orange sellers on the road)

left cvo at 5.15pm on Saturday 21st, used the 125, stopped for petrol, in P4 around 6.25. car hire company asked did I use the motorway, I didn't and they gave me back the impress to tear up. (nice and sunny when leaving  but the ladies were out in force )
