Wireless Internet Hookup

I have decided that I don't want to go down the route of installing a telephone line and having to pay monthly line rental in the apartment. So, the next best thing is to use wireless hookup and I can bring my laptop and still be able to work. I emailed the Mirachora (the hotel next to our apartments) to find out if they have wireless internet, but have had no response.
Does anyone know if there are any hotels or offices with wireless connectivity that are in the Estrada do Farol area?
Thanks!

Do a search on Vodafone. Someone posted a while back that they have a deal with them using G3 that is economic.

I am not sure whether that will help me - I just want to be able to pay say 10 euros and have half an hour of someone's wireless broadband!

This is a skype development still in its beta stage I think. You join and either pay for a couple of hours or a monthly fee and it allows you to log in at wi fi hotspots. It claims almost 900 for Portugal. Click on "Find skype zones" but the listing has little logic to it and you might have to scroll through since using search doesn't help too much.

All I have found for Carvoeiro is CTT Rua do Escondidinho 6 (is that the Post Office?) and Tivoli Almansor. Unless you are in the bar opposite my house (unfortunately Poço Partido) and that's if the signal can travel that far

Thanks for this! The Tivoli is not too far from me (about 5 minutes walk) - so would I need to join Skype or would it be easier to go to the hotel and "buy" some on line time?

Buy time at the hotel is the easy way, prices are on the website you looked at

My laptop is set up to access my companies wireless VPN in England. Would this still work OK in Portugal or would I need to do something "technical" to it?
(thanks for all the help btw!)

When you buy the wifi time voucher, instructions are on there for settings, but you should not need them just switch on connect to pt's page enter the username and password............and start surfing

Depends how it is set up but you probably will. Talk to your systems manager at work. A nice bottle of claret works for me.

I usually find threatening to try to do it myself is the most effective way of getting my IT work done!

Some try that approach. After their boss has had to ask me very nicely to re-enable their account they tend not to try that one a second time.
