Just got back from CVO and one thing I did notice how much it costs in the local supermarkets for bread and milk:-

Milk €1.40
Bread€2.40

Total cost for the two items €3.80 approx £2.80 I think. Now I think thats expensive !!

Was this inetrmarche, Modelo or the small alisupers.

ie Tourist prices or normal.

hmm seems about the same as here depending on the size of the milk and quality of the bread ofcourse.

Warburtons seeded batch in the co-op was about £1.65 the other day and 2 litres of milk easily £1.20

Use the bread shop in CVO, Great bread and good prices.
We found the milk cheaper up at the market or in the small supermarket with the veggies in the in road.

Over here in UK, Tescos,Asda & Sainsburys have been heavily fined for over pricing their milk/dairy/ cheese products..
On counytry file a few weeks ago, dairy farmers were saying it was hard for them to make a living..the supermarkets take all the profits

I buy integral bread at 65 cents a loaf and UHT milk at about 60 cents a litre in Plus. Or I shop in Modelo. I think only tourists pay those sorts of prices. And the Intermarche (which I went in for the first time in over a year) charges tourist prices too it seems (even at this time of year

).

We will not use Intermarche for these very reasons plus at Modelo you can use you continente loyalty card and get discounts and promotions.

Thanks for the tip Misty. We normally just head straight to Intermarche without thinking. Just habit. We never seem to travel the extra couple of hundred yards to Plus and rarely visit Modelo. Will do this Christmas though after seeing you post.

We are starting to use Modelo quite a bit, also Plus for basic kitched stuff and pretty good veg and meat. But I must admit I'm going to use Blue Rock butchers from now on as I think his prices for the quality is pretty reasonable. As Gary doesn't do the shopping

I'm starting to find it pretty expensive for basic milk and bread but there again I'm not a fan of the local bread as I find it quite hard so I have to pay in the long run.

I agree about Modelo verses Intermarche re prices.
I also agree with Gary over the very heavy, doughy local bread. Not to my taste at all.
You can get nicer bread in the Hypa markets, so worth the trip for that alone!

They used to do a more french style bread at the Supermarket on the "outroad"....do they still do it?

d'you mean the one sort of opposite Bojangles Bruce? Im sure it was closed when I was out there last?

Oh lord yes, the bread. When we lived there I used to buy the hard,holey stuff and thought my teeth were going to be pulled out when eating it!

..and it'd be like stone the next day!(made lotsa bread pudding

)
So I would end up buying fresh rolls each day.
On holiday now, Kteee usually gets me the sliced integral which is better & keeps well.
and I always use the local shops in Carvoeiro for bread, milk,groceries.

The Alisuper on the outroad opp Bojangles is now another estate agents (just what we all need!).
If yr looking for bread on the out road tho, just before the new estate agents and after the pottery market and there is a little bakery (Paderia) thats open for fresh bread all year. They dont have a lot of choice but its all fresh and not too expensive.
The new bakery next to casa algarvia (papa e compania) is great if you want bread day or night and never seems to close and they have a bit more choice. they also have a few nice cakes and savory pastries for snacks too.
As with everything here, if you eat what the locals eat its really not much more expensive then it has ever been, if you want food that feels more like home then you pay the price. I never thought I would actually buy longlife milk!

Its a shame that little supermarket has gone..I use to use it quite a lot in the past( I stay next to A Velha restaurant)...but it was never very busy so guess that they had to close? Shame

I do use the 'Bom dia' supermercado a lot and the other one in the 'in road'. coming from the Chinese shop & before Post Office..I don't find them expensive and just love the salad veg & fruit.
I have a joke with the lady in the in road one as I only ever buy 1 custard tart( a weakness of mine)..told her if I buy 2 Id eat them & get too fat!

Theres a 'cosiness' about the village that I like and the shopkeepers get to know you.
Of course, when we lived there we got to know many and they became friends.
Thanks for the info on the bakeries..Ill give them a go next time Im out(& Ill try to stay away from the cakes

)
