I agree, since I started driving in Portugal I can't understand anyone paying for transfers if they can drive. It works out cheaper than taxis, quicker than coach and you have access to transport for the duration of your stay. ~~ No argument~~

Well I can understand it and there is certainly an argument, or a discussion rather. A lot of people do not have the confidence to drive in foreign countries and I am sure there are many who do not wish to drive whilst on holiday especially if that is what they do as a job 9-5. I personally choose not to drive whilst on holiday at this time and select villa/hotel/apartment locations within easy reach of all amenities. I say at this time because the kids still come and although I wouldn’t mind touring around they are not interested. If it was my wife and I only and not our main holiday and out with peak times I would probably hire a car for a few days of sightseeing. If anyone can get me a hire car for 6 adults and luggage for two weeks in the height of summer for less than €120 then I will take it from the airport to my villa and keep it for the duration of the holiday just in case.

I confess that we rarely hired a car for more than a few days when the kids were small. I expect that most people are a little apprehensive when driving abroad for the first time but I just wanted to reassure them that it is a relatively simple process (with the exception of the N125 roundabout thing at Lagoa) and I'm reasonably confident with that now.

Driving in Portugal is a pleasant experience compared to the UK and there is so much more that can be seen.

yes, that is true - and if you don't mind pulling over when you do the "seeing", that would be very much apreciated by me, who needs to go somewhere, usually.....

We generally only recomend transfers to first-timers and people with lots of luggage - saves you driving around (and paying for) a station wagon just because you need to get the luggage from/to Faro.

I beg to differ re: driving being a pleasant experience compared to the UK. Last time I went back to the UK I was there for a month and not once in that time did I have anyone driving so close to me that they're almost an extra passenger in my back seat. It was a joy to have people sitting in a traffic queue actually letting you turn out and into roads instead of blatently ignoring you and squeezing as close to the car in front as they can so you have no chance of getting into any gap. It also made a refreshing change to see motorists using the correct lanes at a roundabout, something the Portuguese have no concept of, and at give way signs to actually give way!! It was also a joy to see cars move over when I was joining a dual carriageway or motorway. Also no wreckless overtaking to be seen. If the Portuguese want to overtake on bends and kill themselves, fine just as long as it involves no-one else. It was also great to be thanked when I let anyone into traffic or stopped to let someone cross a zebra crossing and not to be ignored as if it's their God given right to do so. Rant over!

We arrive late at night so hubbie does not want to be picking up a car for hire and driving in a strange place in the dark!

So taxi is our preferred choice

If we want to hire a car for two days when we are in Carvoiero
Is this an option?

My first time in Portugal was arriving late at night with Michael driving for the first time! It was hairy but actually oddly enjoyable....

You'll have no bother hiring a car at all Booboo so have a great time...

Footnote for G.... I thought it was only the little white train that really annoyed you...!!!!!

I beleive the minimum duration for most car hire companies is 3 days.

Actually BooBoo, I would suggest that the late night hire would be the best option.
There is a map on this forum, or I can send you a copy of my own idiots guide from the airport to Carvoeiro

There will be far less traffic later on. The road is really well marked all the way, and your husband will be far more able to acclimatise in those conditions than having to do battle with some of Portugals kamikaze daytime drivers.

A taxi will cost you over £40 each way, which is at least 2/3 of a weeks car hire.

We use a company called Travelrent for hire cars, they are a bit cheaper than the major companies, and in 5 years they have always given us good service.
If you want my agent to book it for you, just pm me with the drivers name, and the flight dates,times and numbers.
