amphibians and lizards

We found a 20 cm lizard looking thing in our swimming pool. It did swim slowly so we knew it was alive. After fishing it out with the pool cleaning net we set it on the terrace but it did not move far. At night it moved a few metres along the pool edge.
It is quite fat looking, dark brown with a lighter dull greenish brown underside and a thickset long tail and a broad head. It moves on land slowly.
I would be interested to know what it is as it is quite unlike the little dark lizards we see in the garden amongst the rocks and also unlike the guekkos we see around the lights at night.
