my advice after having lived here 12 years is dont buy any business here...as my lagoa accountant told me..."they dont like business here" and as a result it is made as difficullt and tricky as possible for anyone to run anything. only those with the quality of long suffering make it
and i forgot..for those who expect to be paid here..there is a prayer meeting every sunday

i am afraid the example of all this offshore business is just another example of why not to invest.

Guest may be right, but there are a lot of foreigners (English, Dutch, Germans) who do good business in bars, restaurants, garden centres, real estate, even in Portugese tiles.
(The Portugese have forgotten their past I suppose, in the 16th century they were (with the Dutch) the best traders in the world).

So if you want to do business here, you will need some patience but it surely is possible.

the number of changes in rest and bar owners in the algarve is quite awesome....it is said in the uk that for every 3 rest that open ...2 close...i am sure it is very true here.

the difference in the uk is that they try to encourage business..i recall when the steel works in corby closed the uk govt announced a new idea of enterprise zones..no rates..no restrictions..open your business and get on with it...result with 5 years corby was doing well again.

here in portugal the first thing anyone says ...wheres your licence?
if not you will be fined!!!!

my local garage who is bemoaning the lack of sales created by the almost 40% tax on cars here, when i asked what does the govt do to help you.

answer. nothing

indeed there are those who do well...but i have known many good business people from the uk who have had good business skills and could have contributed greatly to the economic well being of the region apart from tourism have just gone away...given up.

Having lived here for well over 20 years I regret that there are a lot of truisms inthe posts on this topic. It ain't easy but I guess if you want to be your own boss it is not easy anywhere? Long hours, hard work, patience and a good smattering of rightplace/right time/luck.
