can anyone tell me some prices so i know what kind of budget i will need for a family of 3 for 2 weeks?? things like eating out (breakfast,lunch,dinner),cigarettes, beer, spirits, fizzy drinks, cocktails,ice-cream etc.......first time in portugal this july, can't wait!! how much in euros do you think would be enough??

I hate to scare you, but for all that, for 2 weeks, I wouldn't expect alot of change out of £1000, (including car hire)

well we were thinking about 100 euro a day for the 2 weeks, would that be enough??

I would say £1000 excluding car-hire. When I last went with the kids (3) and rented at Monte Carvoeiro we ate out every day - lunch and dinner -and I spent £100 per day on average (included a couple of trips). That was at least 4 years ago.

Cigarettes are cheaper as is beer and spirits if you are drinking in however for the rest and drinking out (the measures are better but not the cost per drink) it will actually cost you much the same as it would in a holiday resort in the UK.

I am assuming that you will be eating and drinking in resort and not out in more 'locals' places.

Honestly resort prices are comparable to the UK.

There are only 2 of us and we spent over £1,000 in 10 days when last over there in May - that is with taxi's, some breakfasts out, some lunches and 6 meals out at night plus plenty of drinks. Also shopping at supermarket and market included in that total.

Last year we budgeted on about 100 euro's a day but must have been spending 120/140 this time.

Have a great time - back out there in 10 weeks ourselves

Richard and I eat out regularly during our 14 night stay. He usually has a full breckie at least 10 times,I eat fruit from the market 1x 14, dinner out 2 x 14 nights, drinks,coffees, juices, snacks etc for the two of us = £1200.
With 2 adults I would work on £1200 and approx £400 per child under 14 x 14 nights.
Renting cars, diesel,accomodation etc for us it usually works out at another £1200.
return Flights and golf bags =£170
Richards golf rounds over 14 night stay = £250
God this now tells me how much I spend, must go on a spend thrift mode

... and don´t forget about the tips - about 10% of the bill are usual

Spirits are probably most expensve with a spirit and mixer on average 5 euro , thats 4 quid old money .

Depends on how much work you want to do cooking etc!
If you shop carefully, I reckon my OH (who goes out 1 week a month to the apartment) spends about 30 euros a day - most of which is probably on beer!

WHen I go out in the summer for just over 2 weeks, I allow 50 euros a day but rarely spend that much - but I get pasta takeaways which are so large that they last two meals!

I've noticed in a lot of the bars in Carvoeiro now the spirits measures have got smaller, though they try to diguise this by using slimmer glasses, & the prices have got correspondingly larger.

The Intermarche will have everything you need but it's not the cheapest.

We are a mature couple and have just returned from The Alentejo and Carvoeiro. It is much cheaper up north, but that is not where you will be.What we found was that prices had risen quite a bit since last visit, but, mainly because the exchange rate is so poor. As "maddi" suggested, calculate on average English prices and all being well you will have a little lee way for contingencies. When Pt first went from Esc to € we paid around 63p to get a €, now it is nearer 84p! Bom Viagem. Edit: forgot to add that due to current fuel fiasco diesel went up 4 cents per litre between filling Monday at East end of Algarve and pre-return top up at Faro........€1.429 per litre [approx £1.20/ltr]

Honestly I am not a "maddi" I really am called Maddi, I am one of those irritating people who gets all sanctimonious sometimes about not hiding behind usernames as I use my real name on every website and forum I use.
