I was so pleased to see in my latest "Wolves" newsletter ,that the EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom has announced that the "Iberian" wolf will remain fully protected by law,south of the Duero river in Spain.
Thanks to all the thousands who sent e-mails and letters protesting against the proposed slaughter.
Reading this had me thinking how much wildlife was lost in this summers terrible fires that raged through Portugals wooded countryside,not just in Algarve but the beautiful green North of the country.
Sincerely hope that the number was'nt too great and that "Flora and Fauna " soon return.
Footnote: After an absence of over 70 years--the wolf is back in France! Just a few packs that have wandered over the maritime alps from Italy.The alps are not an ideal location and wooded areas such as Lorraine and Champagne are being considered for re-establishment as they have good populations ofwild boar and deer.

The narrator? None other than Bill Clinton! Hesjoinedby Mikhail Gorbachev and Sofia Loren.
Clinton concludes the recording with " The time has come to leave wolves in peace"!
Bill and Mikhail are donating their fees to AIDS and environmental charities.

Yes Tiny Tim --youre perfectly right--but I have to admit I was somewhat surprised regarding the "wolf" situation--I never thought there would be so much interest--great result though Im sure you'll agree?
As for the topic "Disappearing World" To be truthful--I wouldnt quite know where to begin with this one----from some of the postings it all seems inevitable but maybe -- as you suggest--it just needs someone/or a few to get the ball rolling----

Yes I find it very curious in Old Blighty that the rights of the fox, the horse, the dog, the cat, the you-name-it vertabrae, as well as listed heritage buildings, seems to get much more attention, than let's say, the rights and needs of the children of this country.

No -I dont believe youre generalising too much Tim.
It all very true what you say about here in UK.
An old friend of mine in Carvoeiro --a british lady in her 80s -who'd lived there for decades, once said to me and I quote
"The Portuguese beat their animals and spoil their children -with us Brits its mostly the other way round"
Well of course --I would never go along totally with her remarks--but she was makinga valid point.
Though I value all life I could never go down the road of some--the saving animals fanatics who carry out all manner of diabolical things even endangering humans to put their point across.
But surely there has to be a happy medium where we can live in harmony with our fellow creatures--who have as much right to be here as we do.
Not sure I get the gist of CMs remarks --maybe hes too witty for me---But yes--I think the wolf is a great survivor and Im glad hes back in France and what better place to be re-established than in "Champagne"!

of course--if youre a visitor to France--and go to the Mercantour National park ---be careful if you planning to have a picnic---someone/thing may be watching you ----with a pair of yellow eyes

Apart from in a zoo/animal parks-------
if youre really interested in their survival -you can adopt a "pack" for £20 a year --you receive regular updates on them and photos of individual named wolves--Im about to aquire a wolf family myself--looking forward to that---also read that the "bear" may be introduced back into France--now "there" is something for you to "grapple" with
