Organic Food

Hi
Can anyone advise where organic fruit, veg and meat can be bought in the area?
We have a couple renting our villa in Sesmarias for a few months and they have asked? I believe there is a farm shop somewhere near the Fatacil and that the butchers in the village may sell organic meat?

English owned organic farm shop Da Terra is down a narrow road opposite the rear entrance of the Fatacil. There is a sign at the entrance to the narrow road.

would highly recommend it, we bought all our veg there in August and didn't have a single complaint.

The amazing thing is that when everyone ate organic food the average life expectancy of humans was about 50 years, how do you explain that??

Simple Pato, food hygiene, and standards have improved over many years, cooking procedures also are far better, and knowledge of bacteria, and how to kill them with cooking are vastly improved since those days.
You are talking about a time when sewers were appalling, food was badly stored and there were no refrigerators.

How the hell does anyone know that this stuff is really organic

Next they will be talking about global warming and introducing green taxes.

Me I think its all poppycock

The only organic food I have ever eaten is the stuff I grew on my allotment.

Even now that could be crap to excuse the pun but you cannot even trust the manure you use..

Get real its all a bloody con and who can afford this luxury anyway and does anyone believe they are going to live a day longer by eating organic food...

Im inclined to agree with you Gary...how do you know?

To tell the truth, the only stuff I can guarrantee as 'organic' is that which I grow in my own garden.......a lot of this so-called organic produce you buy at suermarkets/farmshops, you can pay the earth for.

However I do have a local health shop which sells fruit & veg and I have it on word of honour from the elderly couple who run it that its locally produced & is organic, and their prices are much lower than those in supermarkets/farm shops.
But I only really believe that which I grow is totally organic..I never spray and the manure comes from my neigbours horses

Modelo have a range of organic vegetables, don't know how the prices compare to the other veg'. I don't buy organic, I do try to buy portuguese produce rather than imported, the fuit & veg in portugal just seems to taste better anyway.

That is so true blue....apart from growing my own, Ive never tasted better tomatoes than in Portugal, I just love making salads when Im staying there.
Organic produce can be expensive to buy but I maintain that if you wash fruit well, or peel it, same for veg, then its fine.

I don't grow as much as I used to. I did have an allotment at bottom of garden(small) and have grown all sorts, french beans, runner beans, potatoes etc but got inundated with slugs. So now if I grow stuff, I do it in large pots..and I grow potatoes in bin liners. Strawberries & cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets.

But I do agree that the veg & specially the fruit & salad veg in Algarve is gorgeous & actually tastes the way it is supposed to taste

Excuse me, but if you advertise that you are selling 'organic' food you need to be accredited, your land has to be free of any chemicals over a period of time (I am sorry but I don't remember off the top of my head how many years but Baggysallyjane would be able to tell you as all her meat is organic) everyone who sells 'organic' is regularly checked that this is still applicable. Also you are not allowed to use any type of chemical spray etc on your food, if you appreciate your insides the minimum amount of chemicals that you put into it the better. There is a great deal of really good, natural food out there stop being so cynical about it, and mostly, if you are careful in where and how you shop, it is not that much more than most of the 'big' supermarkets.

I think it's called 'freedom of choice' and if an elderly couple choose to spend some of their money on organic food then it shoud not be questioned - especially by someone who sounds completely ill informed on the subject.
I personally do not buy organic but would never presume to call someone elses right to do so 'poppycock'!! Nor would I question the integrity of the retailer who I would supsect are trying to make and honest living.
Perhaps we could get back onto the subject of where Organic food can be purchased in the area .......

I'm far more interested in ethical farming practices than in whether the food is organic.

It has never been scientifically proven that organic food is better for you than the normal stuff.. Yes I agree its freedom of choice but I also think its also down to the size of your wallet.

Anyway I still thinks its poppycock bunkum or whatever you want to call it but hey if you believe in it then enjoy...

I agree that it has yet to be proven that organic is better or not than veg that has been sprayed with hormones, insecticides etc, but when one of your family has a long term illness which effects the intestines, I would rather buy good quality organic food for her than something that may contain chemicals which will only make her condition worse.
This we have proved at home. It got to the stage where my daughter could not eat any vegetables as they were making her condition worse, having stopped eating fruit and veg for a while she then started off again but with only organic or locally farmed/organic veg and has been able to slowly bring back vegetables to her very restricted diet.
So I agree that it is up to the individual as to whether you spend a little more on quality or not, but to see my girl able to enjoy food again it is worth every penny.
