Ive just been reading an article(local paper) about peoples favourite sandwich fillings--- one had a taste for "Sprouts and peanutbutter"!

now while i admit to being partial to "peanutbutter&jam" sarnie (For Coop peanut butter & jelly!)---I must admit the Sprouts version made my stomache turn somewhat :
Do you have --what might be strange to others --weird taste /combination for sandwiches?
Another of mine is peanutbutter& celery.
Or do you have habits with food that annoy your family--my daughter still dips her toast in her tea --yuck.
Are there some things you could never eat? Our friend in Algarve eats chickens feet dipped in chilli!
and I always had to turn away when the carpentry lads ate their squid straight from a plastic lunchbox--insipid white lumps of it swimming in the ink--with ink dripping down their chins

and Id really like to know--do they still shoot tiny
song birds there--Maria used to stand over cooker singeing off the feathers before roasting them---I made out I wasnt hungry!
Have you had strange experiences of eating abroad--ever had to eat(for good manners sake) something you really dislike

But thats all by the by, back on topic, I have a lifetime hatred of cooked green peas. I'm mad about raw peas in the pod, and can sit and eat these all day, but cooked and I choke.

I've had this phobia all my life since I was about 4 years old. Naturally, like many others, I lived at home with my mother through nearly a couple of decades of this prediliction.

and so...

Last weekend, my wife was away, so I went to my dear old mother for Sunday Lunch. As I walked in the door, I kid you not, she greeted me with the sentence "I've cooked your favourite Roast Chicken, Rice and Peas".

Hi Ellie,

I think the nicest sandwich I tried in CVO was a passion fruit, along with a frothy coffee and a handfull of nuts(brazils)

Good question and I will come up with a witty and interesting answer at some point but for the time being . . . the way I have discovered that I do actually like things that I thought I didn't is by "having" to eat them to be polite.

My sister likes a runny fried egg on top of steak & kidney pie, a friend likes marmalade with her curry and also she likes to dip spare rib bones into milk then suck them. Im quite normal in my tastes the only things i hate are celery and anything with a face on, like when they bring your fish to the table with the head still on

I can't stand Salmon,. Ever since I got a salmon bone stuck in my throat during a very posh lunch and I had to quietly choke whilst the speaker finished. now I can't even smell it without feeling ill.
I do love however, crisp sandwiches - they have to be on white bread with butter and preferably plain, my children think its disgusting! as they do about Banana sandwiches - great!
The worst meal I ever had was in India, a Indian friend very kindly invited us to his home to meet his family and proudly showed us his few chickens in the yard, we were then presented with a chicken curry, which as they were very poor was a great honour for us, however it had all its skin on, bones, feet and head and as they ate with their fingers we had too also. But I must admit the hospitality was a humbling experience and we really appreciated it, They did watch over us and wait until we had finished every mouthful! - I think it was their ration'for the whole week. Loretta--your sister having runny egg on S&K pudding reminded me of that friend(who likes chicken feet!) --we ate with him at Vilamoura few times--he used to have burger in bun with fried egg-then let it get cold!then he'd eat it--can you imagine--all that cold yucky egg yolk dripping-ugh!!!
I feel same as you regarding fish served with face on!But adore celery --nice with peanut butter spread down the groove/or cream cheese

Those "fried roaches " Coop --are they a sort of "Tapas"?Nice -sweet & crunchie--mmm
Richard---I love raw peas and other veg--when my Mum used to make stew,Id stand there as she cut the turnip/swede/carrots/onion and eat these raw-out of the cooked meal--all I ate was the meat with gravy!
Maddi--Did you see Madhur Jaffrey(not sure of spelling)the cook-on Sat. she was in Goa--and cooked some lovely grub! So you Pete& kids are in for a treat there--looks great place& lovely beaches-------she said that "Vindaloo" is Portuguese word--Vin(wine) and Aloo/or Alho(garlic)--and that it was now the UKs favourite curry

Maddi, are you going to GOA?
we've been there 3 times, its fantastic and you will love it,
if you get out and about and meet the people you will come back with a different perspective on life.

Hi Tricky

Yes we are going to Goa at Easter and I am sure it will be brill, it is our treat to ourselves to make up for "having" to do the whole Disney thing with the kids - although, obviously they are coming to Goa with us but it will be more our sort of holiday and of course we will already have gorgeous tans by the time we arrive in CVO in May.

I would welcome any tips and advice you can give us, and I am aware there is someone else who uses the forum who is also thinking about going to Goa at Easter, so I am sure he will welcome any tips.

Have been to The Gambia, so have experience of the hassle thing and a lot of poverty, I know this is the stuff that can be off putting to first time visitors.

Anyway, I do hope they don't serve me chicken with its feet, face and feathers still on!!!!!

Back to food, I dip my bars of galxay chocolate in very hot tea and lick off all the melted layers - I understand that from a casual observers point of view this can appear erotic but as this forum once discussed who needs a man when you can have chocolate.

Hi Maddi

Whereabouts are you staying in Goa?

Firstly the food. - Ellie's right it obviously does have portuguese influences
There is a lot of fish, crabs, lobster and fantastic tiger prawns, and as I remember for a very reasonable price. One of my fondest memories is of spending New Year's day on the beach in hut that appeared to have just a tin can and flame as its cooking utensils and eating lobster and drinking
beer all day for £12.00 for eight of us! Curry is not quite as popular there as you would image, but you must try Prawn Balcho and have a Dosa for breakfast (kind of folded over chapati filled with curried vegetables - great for the hangover). The spirits are pretty horrible unless they are imported so stick to the beer.
The people are very friendly but as you've been to the Gambia you will know that you do get hassled on the beach but learn to live with it.
Taxi's are cheap and its a good idea to hire a driver for the day and go to some of the further away beaches and towns, when we were there (some time ago) it cost about £10.00 for the day, but that usually included a real charachter for a driver!.
If you let me know your location, I might be able to be a bit more specific.
But whatever, you will have a great time.
p.s. hope you hotel has a pool as the sea is pretty rough.

i`m sure we have all had an experience of eating for politeness..my worst experience happened only last month...i was taken out for a meal by the export manager of a large steel mill in belgium.we went to a town called waterloo,and she gave me the option of chinese,italian or regional...of course i plumped for regional..

not wishing to appear amateur,or maybe trying to show off a little,i ordered my entire meal in french..!,only to find that the prawn cocktail i thought i`d ordered turned out to be "crevettes gris" which were tiny grey prawns,which hadn`t turned pink,and tasted like the floor of a trawler

the taste remained throughout the meal.
nothing ventured nothing gained

when i was about 10 years old in junior school I was invited round to a school friends house after school. She had just moved into a large cottage in an upmarket village a few miles away from our suburban estate.

After an hour her Mum called us in for tea (dinner - stuffed marrow and goulash)

The sweat was pouring off me and sipping water helped whilst trying not to throw the whole lot up

I naively thought all kids ate spaghetti or fish fingers & chips when their friends came round for tea

Another friend had the same thing offered to her on her visit and the toilet came in very handy - but she had been warned

Give me a fry up with loads of black pudding anyday or lobster & caviar
