We are coming to CVO next Sunday with children.

If weather is not great we'd like to find an indoor swimming pool in CVO / near CVO. Do any of the hotels allow non hotel residents to access their facilities?

Your help is much appreciated.

Tivoli Almansor allows use of their indoor pool alongside its Turkisk bath/steamroom facilities at a very cheap rate,although im not sure if this applies to children.

I spoke to the Almansor a few weeks ago, and they said they don't allow non-residents to use the pool. In fact I couldn't find anywhere closer than the municipal pool at Lagoa (which is very nice, 2 euros a session for adults, but don't forget your swimming hat and flip flops!)

Another option is Boca do Rio in Mexilhoeira da Carregação (near Village Inn) I know they do annual membership but don't know about day rates

We enquired at Boca do Rio a few weeks ago to see what their prices are and yes they do a day rate - not cheap though - 18 euros per person a day. This includes unlimited use of the indoor swimming pool, gym, sauna and Turkish bath.

It has occurred to us that, although it would be a major expenditure, the town might benefit from investing in an indoor swimming and recreation complex with library, etc.

It could be a benefit and attraction to "snow birds" from North America and elsewhere as well as to locals and others who could take advantage for lane swimming, aquafit, basketball, and other pursuits (maybe some theatre or card games etc) which many of us enjoy in our home towns.

The pools at Rocha Brava, for instance, are of limited value in winter and I suspect this is true of many other resorts. The golf is too expensive for many of us.

Touring, walking and shopping seem now to be the main pursuits for a lot of us. When we talk to others here about our experiences, they seem reluctant to follow us although it's hard to understand how they find more of value in Florida or the south west, for example.

I guess it is a long way to go for North Americans to escape the winter and the winters are long. But, with the addition of more facilities, CVO could attract many more from NA. The air fares this year are especially attractive.

If you have transport I think there is an indoor pool in Silves - just across the bridge and along to the left.

The indoor pools in Silves are excellent, but you will need flip-flops and a cap. Also you will need to take passports, in lieu of ID cards.

Monte Santo Resort offers non-resident use of indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym etc. at 25 euros per day or 60 euros per week.

Not cheap but brand new and well equipped.

Monte Santo would be very convenient, but I think I'll stick with Lagoa municipal at 2 euros a go - I have to swim for physiotherapy so it's a necessity rather than a luxury. Unfortunately I'm not well enough to swim at the moment, but will need to start again post-op!

Kteee, given the convenience of Monte Santo, that you probably only want to use the pool, and the fact that I very much doubt they are inundated with visitors, I'd guess they may well be prepared to discuss their rates with you.

You would not disclose the special deal that they offered you, but you would certainly give them good references on this forum

Given the likely running costs over there I'll be surprised if they're up for negotiating, but no harm trying I suppose - could go for the sympathy vote?

The municipal pool at the sports complex in Alvor is VERY cheap asa are all their facilities, all very good as well.
