Lisbon

Hi,

I'd like to visit Lisbon when I come to Carvoeiro next month. Can someone tell me the best option for my wife and I to travel there - and how long the journey might take?

Train?
Bus?
Car - I have already hired a car and don't mind the drive; but what about parking in the town?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Last year we drove from Lisbon to the Algarve in about 5 hours, and drove back.
The motorway out of Lisbon is great, no problems and well signposted
Don't do it at night, nightmare stuff,

the portugese drivers are in a class of their own

Lisbon was busy as hell, traffic mad, very hard to find parking or even stop!
The local police were very helpful though and the whole trip was well worth it, gorgous city!

Hi

Avoid the hassle - take a coach excursion from CVO - a number of agents in the centre of CVO sell them. Either a very long day excusion or an overnight stay in Lisbon - at least the driver will know where he's going & you can enjoy the journey, the sights & snatch a few ZZZ's on the return!

hey
the road to lisbon is very straight.so if you wanted to drive its pretty good-however id agree wit above-the portuguese drivers are all over the road-no offence!

but i didnt think it would take 5hrs id have put 4 on it but im probably wrong!the safest thing id reckon is to take a coach-if your stayin in hotel/appartment they run tours there once a week!

Lisbon is barely 3 hours away now the motorway is fully open. Make sure yoiu have a credit card or cash for the tolls. Unless you are a nervous driver I would give it a go. If nervous then take one of the many coaches that leave Lagoa.

Going up tonight, looking forward to the new motorway. A friend of mine took exactly two and a half hours from Lisbon centre to the end of the Via do Infante in Silves at a steady spead of 120-130 Kmh.

As for travelling there by car, I would suggest you take the car up, make sure you get a hotel with parking, go straight to the hotel, park your car and leave it untill you drive back down.

Lisbon has a superb public transport system and taxis are also not that expensive.

My personal recomendation goes to the Hotel Tivoli or the Marquês de Pombal, both located on the Avenida da Liberdade, from there you can almost walk everywhere (except to the castle on the hill

)

Thanks for the advice.

I'm a confident driver but it would be a long day's drive - and we can't really afford to stay overnight - so taking the car is out.

The bus sounds good. Does anyone recommend any tour company - or advise to avoid any such companies

No-one mentioned the train; why was that?

Finally, no, this isn't the first time to Carvoiero (it'll be the 2nd); and we have been to The Algarve four times previously.

We went up to Lisbon on the new motorway last September, there wasnt much traffic on the road but this was probably due to the toll charge which came to about £15 I think. I feel the charge was worth it as that road takes you all the way through, we did it in somewhere between 2 and a half to 3 hours. We did stay over night but parked in the car park underneath the Marques De Pombal which was reasonable price with good security. This is also the place to pick up the bus tours round the city if you are into that sort of thing!

Hi me again!

One thing I forgot to mention - choose the tour company carefully. A few years ago we went on a day trip to seville from CVO & made a big mistake in choosing a 'cheap' excursion.

Things went from bad to worse - picked up at about 6am in mini bus & taken a few miles to a RV point and waited for ages to RV with other mini buses. Embarked on journey - air conditioning not working - blowing hot air

- coach broke down on motorway - no courier to point out places of interest. Arrived back at our hotel - very tired, some 18 hours later.

Remember - choosing the economy model is not always the best policy! Hope this helps.

whats wrong with the train. go from tunes 3 to for hours to lisbon. best the 8 oclock train its about 20 something euros.

Now this sounds good. A nice relaxing ride on the train. Is Tunes far from Carcoeiro; and can I leave the car at the rail station?

re train. yes you can park your car right outside tunes railway station. no fees!!!!! tunes from carvoeiro is about 20 mins. go on the new motorway from lagoa to albufeira then head north to lisbon....its about 10 mins then there is tunes. be in good time as the train is popular and they shut the level crossing gates very early which means you will have difficulty getting to the station. the train stops this side of lisbon and you will have to get a ferry across ..this is included in the price. isnt public transport wonderful!!!
