Campos I wish you all the luck but, I would think ten times before openning anything up there, as proven from past attempts.

For once I would agree with Carvoeiro 1 May I suggest that to help you have any chance of success you do not charge the stupid prices many of the bars in Carvoeiro ask. Take a good look at Alvor and Rocha where brave souls have dropped their prices and competition has meant busier bars.
The one definate advanatage of Monte Carvoeiro is the easy parking, it would be great if the square there could return to the lively place it was 15/20 years ago.

We recommend the Monte Carvoeiro to guests and anyone we know who is visiting the village , particularly if you are staying on the west side.
Good selection of places to eat from Phoenix nights to Elliots and Salmao plus friendly bars.
It is also walking distance from many developments and villas with the BIG plus you can always find somewhere to park if driving.

If you want to go into the centre afterwards its downhill all the way( taxi home ).

It is an overlooked part of carveiro.

Interesting point you make there Jaylay - easy parking - reduced bar prices could, I suggest, mean more people would be inclined to take the risk to drink and drive. Access to Taxis in MC is not easy - while in the village walking to the taxi rank is usually a pleasant stroll.

I don't subscribe to 'the reduce the prices to get more people into bars' proposition - I believe the day of the bar/pub is a bygone tradition - at least in major conurbations it is. I suspect in rural areas it could be the centre of village activity - but supermarkets have put paid to that in towns and cities. The risk associated with having a drink and driving home is too big for most to contemplate.

The rise in dining-in products in the major supermarkets is also a tell-tale sign. For the most part our circle of friends now meet at one of our homes before going out - whereas previously it would have been a bar. I don't believe the bar prices brought that about - the surly barmaid, blaring music and going through a 'curtain of smoke' to get there wouldn't have helped. Creating the right ambiance should be the main priority of any publican/bar owner - the price (within reason) is secondary.

While I can't prove this - I would suspect there is an element of 'price-fixing' as most bars are within a few cents of each other for the same drink. Even if it is not price fixing - it is likely they 'bench-mark' to get a feel for the price they will get away with. There's everything right in making a profit - reasonable is the adjective to describe it with though.

The bars in Estrado do Farol/Rua do Baranco etc are expensive because they have huge overheads (I'm not feeling sorry for them - it's a fact) with little opportunity to spread the cost over too many products - whereas supermarkets have 1000's of lines to pick up the cost with. Cheap prices will only attract the riff-raff and all that those sort of people bring with them - I don't think Monte Carvoeiro wants that sort of reputation - does it

Only last week another one opened called Rendevous, offering dancing and music from the 60's - 90's. It is where the indian restaurant was.

5 bars (Phoenix Nites, Manoeles Jazz club, Cocktail Academy plus 2 more) in such a small area will be interesting, wonder what effect it will have on the restaurants and apartments up there with them all competing with their music and live sporting events echoing around the square.

I think Monte Carvoeiro could do with any reputation rather than it's present one of "Dead". Lively would surely be better, do you complain that restaurant hill has bars and restaurants along both sides of the street?

I do agree that times have changed and bars do not do the trade they used to do, (we ourselves do not meet for pre dinner drinks in a bar as we used to). Although there is still a market for bars for people who want to mix with others, eg the guy who wants to see the "match" not alone, but to cheer with or banter against an oppostion fan ,couples with young children who seek adult company or another family with friend seeking kids while on holiday. Most people who do use bars now want value for money (like anything else in life ) not rip off prices.

We don't use that area - not sure why - it has nothing we want or need (apart from the occasional Pizza). Frankly the thought of using a bar that has Sky TV/Live Football - is the last place we would want to be but I accept it suits some.

No argument with your point of view - but you are missing the point I was making - I believe. The bars in Carvoeiro have a small window of opportunity to make a return on their investment vis-a-vie their overheads and income. If you believe their prices are excessive (maybe they are - I don't know) - try Villamoura to get a like-for-like comparison (beer prices) - not their clientele. I don't believe there will be too much difference - except in the night clubs. Of course you can always do the other thing - don't go there if all you are going to do is 'whinge' about the price of their beer.

The price of beer is not something that keeps me awake at night but on the occasions I use a bar/pub I drink a bottle of Peroni that costs - in Carvoeiro (when I can get it) €3.00 - in a bar in Chichester it costs £3.75. Incidentally in the supermarket it costs 80p for the same size bottle. I can live with that.

You read of the UK pub trade 'dying on its feet' - their prices are not inexpensive (compared to supermarkets) and they have, in the main a 365 day trading window - whereas Carvoeiro is probably half that. That is not to defend high prices more a case of make it when you can - if you can
