Obtaining a dog!

Hi all
This post is on behalf of my mum and dad who live in Carvoeiro but dont know how to post!
My mum recently lost her yorkie of old age and is after another yorkie, or a yorkie/poodle cross or a Maltese/yorkie cross or simliar.
Would anybody know where the best place is, are there any local breeders etc? There is nothing at the rescue centre and she is struggling at the moment.

have you tried goldra centre who are closing and desperate to find homes for dogs, also the donkey sanctuary, bridgit hicks, bamboo centre in lagos..even the bianca charity in lisbon,,all would welcome you to take a dog rather than buying another one

It sounds from your description as though they are limiting themselves to a yorkie X of some sort, we adopted a small blonde shaggy thing that was about 9 months old at the time, she's about the size of a fox terrier now & absolutely gorgeous. Our vet in Guia has a board up that is permanently covered with photo's of bitches & their litters desperately wanting loving homes & I'm sure most of the other vets have similar boards. There is also a lady called Verna who does a great deal to help find homes for dogs, I was given her number when we were looking for homes for the pups our dog had & she was extremely helpful. and The Portugal News english language newspaper usually has lots of ad's from the smaller less known animal sanctuaries.

I am amazed that there is nothing in the Rescue Centre. There are dozens if not hundreds of dogs roaming the streets of the Algarve without owners or shelter. They leave their "calling cards" on the pavements and beg for food. I don't think the Portuguese care enough about these animals.
