The Black Stove & Entertainment in Carvoeiro

Post by martin.cork »

What a shame to see this beautiful establishment with very little custom.
It's the middle of the summer season and this establishment is struggling.
I understand that there are issues with the music license but i cannot understand how Brady's, Roundup, Mungos have no problems with music at night.
My info is that only Jailhouse & Bote are the only two with a music licence. The Black stove would be the best music venue in town (if they had music).

I would also like to comment on the RoundUp, Big Will is the most welcoming person in Carvoeiro and makes time to talk to all visitors, he is a great ambassador for Carvoeiro.
A visit across to the road to Pele is recommended for a late night snack, very popular with the locals, great character.
Be careful of his cooking ????
Unfortunately judging by the empty spaces the Carvoeiro Bar has lost its charm and also its regular custom .
The music in the square outside Mungos is a great idea, well done to the businesses for coming up with this, I am sure it will pay dividends.
The music on offer at Brady's is at its usual high level, Twin Flames-Outsiders are well worth watching and as the norm the service is exceptional.
Another place worth a visit is the Jailhouse, an establishment that is there for many years and you always get a great welcome.
Hemmingways/Imprevisto are also good establishments especially when there is nightly music on the stage outside.
The snacks are also great and are excellent value. Only down side is the charge for Magners cider.
For Sunday lunch The Irish Times is the best in town.
Also for the ladies/gents the jewellery shop next door is an excellent one with great value and also gives great after care service.
You will see this by the amount of regular customers it has.
We still await the opening of the restaurant next to O Patio (same owner).
One thinks that the politics in Carvoeiro are similar to the politics in Ireland.
The small changes made to the traffic at Hotel Carvoeiro Sol have improved the flow of traffic but i would not agree with the steel poles , especially at the square. It's an accident waiting to happen
I note that the sunken lights in the roadway are still broken and will probably never be repaired.

On a positive note each year the town and its surrounds are improving and the businesses are making a great effort to welcome visitors.
I have always recommended Carvoeiro as the best place in the Algarve to visit, it gets better every year. Congratulations to All.

I can not belive that the Black Stove is going down with customer. Give is two weeks and we will fill it only that there will be four of us. Went there last year just after it opened. Lewis the Cocktail bar man is the best and Phil always making you feel welcomes. I cant wait to have my regular cocktail (Alabama Slammer) . Brayds is the best.... Waiting staff are great always friendly also. Cant wait to the Twin Flames-Outsiders again , they really bring in the crowd. They have only gotten better over the last two years. Klonakilty where the best over all...

THe Black stove is an opportunity missed as it is a large venue at the top of the hill.
If our experience last year was anything to go by its perdominately Irish Character and music will not appeal to everyone and could be a factor in its demise.

I hope it does not go down the route of its sister venue in Alvor where last month when we went there Black Stove Staff were handing out flyers with invites to horse racing nights ( with betting ).

IT is in the wrong place. For this type of venue to be successful it needs to move away from the more staid environment (which I rather like) at the top of the hill and go into town.

I walk past it several times a day and I never bother going in there - doesn't appeal to me at all. But it would be a shame for that much time and money to be spent on it and for it not to be a success. Does anyone think there are just too many bars in Cvo?

Perhaps they should turn it into an air conditioned gym with a bar - now THEN I would go!!!!

The Black Stove is really nice inside with that lovely balcony on top but saying that it's not my favourite and feel uneasy there. I remember last year taking our drinks up on the balcony with the family and there were a group of people a bit 'four sheets to the wind' the language by this Irish guy was apalling, I mean soooo bad. One gentleman who was having a drink with this wife and actually went over to speak to the guy, asked him to tone down the language. He and his wife just left and we did soon after. Such a shame but it does make me think twice about going there.

Great character?! very well-known for robbing people and charging too much or several times for the same item. Not so popular, epecially with the locals, any more, I fear! Just disgusting!

Quote- kappa-"known for robbing people and charging too much.....................
You should not take a persons character away just for charging too much, the majority of business charge too much , should we tar them all with your brush. Regarding double charging you should always check your bill, I am sure if and what you spend in Peles is not too hard to count....
By locals I mean people (business owners/workers/visitors) that frequent the village most nights,
Pele & Co are open a lot longer than most other premises (18hr days) in the town and he provides a good service to all people.
Compare this with some restaurants open from 5.30 to 10.30 (5hrs).
Regarding your comment disgusting - nobodys perfect, Pele is a part of Carvoeiro a lot longer than you and I , give him a break

I really thought that the Black Stove had a Music License. As when it got to a certain time in the night all they did was close the doors and the music would continue. I honestly think that the position is a good please because it brings people up from the main center to the likes of bradys etc...
I will still be going in two weeks. No matter what people say about it... I love it....

Sorry to disappoint you Paul but if you want to hear live music you will have to go elsewhere.
Fortunately in August there is plenty on offer both inside and outside.
As I have said the Black Stove is a great venue and hopefully they will have live music soon.
They should also make an effort to encourage people in during the day , maybe provide snacks/lunches, etc
and also turn down the sound system during the day,
Loud music blasting from an empty pub will not encourage people in.

If its cocktails you are looking for Paul try Havana, it opens at 5pm and you get 2 cocktails for one until 8pm at a cost of €4.50.
Either one of the two Jennies will take good care of you..
For live music in August the following is on offer ;
Bradys - Tuesday - Twin Flames Thurs & Sun - Outsiders. Closed Saturdays.
Roundup - Live Music 1/2 nights and the rest Karaoke (some good singers this time of year).
Jailhouse-The ever present Bobby
Mungos - Music in the square two nights a week - Ilze & others. (good competition with Roundup)
Stage at Beach - Music 3 nights a week.
Stage at Hemmingways - Music Tuesday & Thursdays.
There are also plenty of stalls usually associated with the peak season around the square and a lot of mime artists
(especially the one with the brazilian flag- a site for sore eyes-make sure you see her/him).
I am not sure if Harry's Bar / places on in/out road have loud music.
There is plenty of entertainment around in August, I am sure you will enjoy....

Thank Martin. Not a big fan of the round up. was there three years ago and left after an hour... Not really my style.
Please dont tell me Brady's close fully on a sat or is that just no music?
I mean they open late enough in anyway?
