Low-cost petrol arrives in Algarve!
The Auchan group will be opening four more low-cost filling stations in Portugal this year – and two of them will be in the Algarve!

The French group hasn’t yet got any low-cost fuel stations in the region, and their plans will pose a challenge to big names like Galp, BP and Repsol, as the prices they charge at their Jumbo hypermarkets, for diesel and petrol, are normally 10-12 cents cheaper than other market brands.

Auchan already has the three top-selling filling stations in Portugal, and ended 2010 with 7% of the national market. “I would like to see another petrol company sell as much as we sell in Alfragide, Almada and Alverca”, said Auchan’s fuel business director Miguel Costa.

Auchan explain their low prices because “there is no take by a concession – which normally levies a charge on sales. We also only sell fuel. We don’t sell tobacco, magazines or food – and we almost never need to hire anyone extra, as the hypermarkets running the filling stations use workers already on the payroll”.

The new filling stations should be opening in Portimão and Lagoa later this year.

You'll have to use the N125 to make it worthwhile, though.

I assume the petrol station under construction at Pau d'azucar will be one of these?? hope so

You can already get discounted petrol at the Continente station at the Portimao shopping centre of the 125 or by using your 5cLtr voucher again from shopping at any Continente or Modelo.

I expect that the Pau a sucar station will match these prices.

There are already a few of these cheaper fuel stations around...one at the retail park on the EN125 just outside Portimão. It has been suggested (and even a few of these cheaper stations have been fined) they use dirty fuel, higher pollution factor, water in the fuel & impurities?? If true cheap can work out expensive....as over time ir will kill the injectors!

Not an issue for those hiring cars.

Can not see the petrol station at Portimao retail park selling inferior petrol, it is a Galp garage and they could not afford to damage their reputation.

It was Galp that was fined a week or so ago for exactly that...it was on the national news!

I am interested in reading about this fact, I usually read the national press but can find nothing about this, can you point me in the right direction

The new petrol station at the Pau d'azucar Supermarket had got to have the cheapest petrol around here at €1.45 with some of the opposition on the 125 at €1.59.
