on the subject of cvo oranges , anyone know why portugal doesn't export it's oranges? supermarkets, multiples etc are full of shit oranges from everywhere except portugal so why not available in our supermarkets? they are much superior to the rubbish available (in ireland anyway)in our shops.

because local co op offers so I am told 5 cents a kilo, thats why in the winter there are more oranges on the floor rotting than hanging as on trees waiting to be picked

I don't know if this is a fact, but I was once told by a local that EEC requirements for how fruit looks are too strict for the Portuguese orange growers. Many of their oranges have blemished skins. However, we buy kilos of these each visit from the roadside vendors, they are always superb, with or without the blemishes.

I understand from a pal in the vegatable wholesale business that in general Portuguese oranges are - wait for it - "too variable in size for EC regulations" and the extra cost of shipping, over those from the vast Murcia district of spain, make them uneconomical.
