On our recent visit to our villa at RB, we were sitting in the garden and a stray young dog came limping up to us. It was no more than a year old and had a dislocated front leg. On checking the leg it had healed and didnt seem to be giving the dog any pain. We left it there, went out for an hour, came back and it was still sitting on the patio. We did not know what do do with it so we put it in the back of the car and went to see the lady in the refuge charity shop in the town. She phoned Bridie the owner and she asked us to take the dog over the road to the new vet. They were extremely nice and said to leave the dog with them. I gave them 50 euros towards any treatment and they said that they would send the dog to the refuge at Estomber.
We decided to visit the refuge next day. I dont know if anybody has been to the refuge but you are confronted with a high wall all around and large sold iron gates 5/6ft high. I had to blow the horn on my car several times before somebody came to the gate.When the gate was opened
we were confronted by about 20 dogs coming leaping towards us. After the initial shock we were told that they were all very freindly, which they were.
We informed Bridie that we were the couple that had taken the dog to the vet and she told us that the vet had not charge any fee and thanked me for the donation.
Inside the gates the area is very big with 60/70 dogs loose, 20/30 dogs in a compound that are unhomeable, and a field of donkeys.
They had just had a new puppy enclosure built and we saw the puppy who hade been washed and brushed and looked great.
The local aqua park had just replace there blue slides and the old ones were given to the refuge which when turned upside down made great shelters and kennels.
We were very impressed with the work that 2/3 dedicated people at the refuge do.
Bridie told me that they are always desperate for worming tablets so if any body fancies dropping a packet into the refuge I am sure they would be most grateful

They are also always grateful for anyone who has a few spare hours to go up and walk the dogs. There are some lovely walks around there and to see how excited the dogs are to be taken on a walk is priceless.

That is a very nice story and it was very kind of you to donate fifty euros. I do hope that poor dog is rehomed. The fact that you showed the poor thing kindness and it stayed until you returned is proof of the lack of affection it had. For the vet to make no charge for his services is proof that there are still decent people who are not money motivated.

If somebody has the exact address of this refuge in Estomber I will willingly airmail a parcel of these worming tablets to them or send a donation to them.

Well, I have done my bit for huma..........er dogmanity and sent out a load of packets of worming tablets for these poor mutts.

If anybody else could also assist it would be great as these four-legged friends and the two ladies whom look after them need all the help they can get.

Hi, I normally phone first to make sure it is convenient to Kat and Bridie. I am hoping to go again on Monday. As I said before the dogs absolutely love being taken out, so be prepared to be taken for a walk rather than you taking them for a walk
