As the heading suggests, can anyone inform me of what I have to do to legally use the toll road from the airport and ensure I dont get ripped off by the hire company??

Your question, reflects the general confusion about this poorly conceived, and hastily implemented system.

The most comprehensive information is at the top of this GENERAL topic, and I wont attempt to summarise it here.

The route I have taken, (forgive the pun), is to revert to the N125, and not have to deal with all the hassle, until such time as some sensible system is implemented, or common sense prevails, and the Portuguese re-think this whole project. Unlikely any time soon, I suspect.

One hire car company owner I know, just advises his clients to allow a little longer for the journey, and avoid the A22
