Car Hire Lisbon Airport

Hi All

Any recommendations suggestions about best companies to use to book a car from Lisbon Airport to drive down to carvoeiro. If we do get the Motorway down to the A2 down can you go avoid going on the A22 and the blessed tolls?

Get a quote from Algarvedriver.com at the top of this page. They don't just do rentals in the Algarve - you can collect a car at Lisbon airport.

Regarding the tolls as you will have paid tolls all the way from Lisbon the amount you will pay for the A22 isn't worth worrying about but if you want to avoid it then turm off at São Bartolomeu de Messines and take the Silves road.

All the normal hire companies are there, but as they are the large nationals, may cost you more.....do a search for the cheapest, on-line why dont you??

You will pay normal "paragem tolls" on the A2. ie you get a ticket going on near Lisbon, and pay at a booth when you come off.....about 18 euros from Lisbon.

At the Algarve end of the A2, you can either go on the A22 and pay the tolls as endlessly described here, or take the signs for N125 Lagos and Portimao. more traffic, a bit slower, but no tolls.

Very useful tips - thanks very much - I have used the A2 before and was very impressed with the lack of traffic and the simple way of paying for the privilege of using it - but we dont want another thread on tolls developing do we!!

I will indeed give Steen a chance to quote and see what else is out there. I will report back!

The thing I find annoying about Steen's quotes is that he never seems to give you the best quote....just offers to match whatever other best quote you get.....so where is the benefit in that??

If he offered to BEAT the best quote....then there would be some point to it!!

These days it is virtually impossible to better quotes; a number of companies will rent out at any price - charge 130 euro for a full tank at delivery and inspect the car with a magnifying glass upon return. We aim for return clients.

Ryanair have built the biggest airline in Europe on that model !

Nobody loves them but they are now the biggest , never underestimate the importance of price especially in the current market.

With a little help from the EU Ryan Air, as other low cost companies, now advertise the price to be paid. Car rental unfortunately does not yet compare, please read viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22673 as an all too common example.

Even in these tough times, I still believe that ' you get what you pay for'
We have people on the phone every day at our Meet and Greet company trying to get us to lower our prices to match others.
Yes we could do that but they would probably find that there would be delays at the airport and that their car was probably not stored in a secure compound.
We have to pay reasonable wages and insurance to our professional staff and reducing prices would mean that we had less staff to cover and damages may occur.
The old adage, of 'if it looks to good to be true, it probably is, still holds.

A low price is what gets you noticed!

The public (possibly wrongly) take safety for granted especially with travel arrangements. We begrudgingly accept "add on's", often applied after we've committed to the purchase, but it is nearly always the price, the location & the timing that entices us to buy.

The quality of the experience may determine if we return to the same supplier to buy again & even if we do we'll still price check it. All facilitated by the worldwide web & consumerism.

as a result of reading this thread, I am now considering flying into Lisbon later in the year, spending a couple of nights there and then taking the train down to Faro. Will then hire the car at Faro airport as usual. Cost of train tickets offset by * no tolls on motorway from Lisbon. * no petrol/diesel, *2 days less car hire.

My car was in Lisbon for a service so picked it up today and drove it back to Algarve... 19.80 euro on one toll and 2.50 euro on another... thats it. Those were tolls with actual manned booths or barriers etc... how much would the other automated tolls be from Lisbon > Algarve?

train fare for 1 is just over €20 so tolls cover one ticket. Petrol probably cover the other, and not renting for 2 days covers taxi from station in faro to airport, I cannot see the upside to renting in Lisbon and travelling to Algarve.

I am only flying into Lisbon because the cost of finding a "cheap" flight from South Wales to Faro is proving very difficult this year. As we are out for a month have bitten the bullet and am flying Heathrow to Lisbon using Air Miles (Avios as they are now called). The "saving" by using the airmiles as opposed to paying the school holiday prices quoted by even the cheap airlines makes this the most cost effective way.

ooopppss! Sorry Jimmy, badly worded on my part. I thought you were travelling to Lisbon by choice, and meant I can't see the downside of not travelling by train from Lisbon and renting at Faro airport, but that would depend on the numbers, in our case 2, so the train is better option, but obviously if there are more of you, then the car is better option. I fly from either Dublin or Belfast and there is plenty of competition so fares are reasonable enough if you book early - but no longer 'cheap' .
I was interested in a break in Lisbon anyway but slightly afraid of parking the car at Tunes for two nights, and the other alternative was taking a taxi from CVO to Lagoa and getting the Lisbon express bus from there, but your op revised my thinking and now I think I will fly into Lisbon, have a 2 day break, train down to Faro and hire car there as usual. (thus my saving 2 days rental from Faro)
