Payment of Toll Charges

Can anyone clarify , and apologies if already mentioned previously.... During the month of October I used the A22 a couple of times in both my vehicles ( with no device in car) . I then have gone to post office to pay and was informed that you could only pay up to 10 days after the journey, then you have to wait for letter, which I presume will come with fine!!
Is there any other way I can get this payment sorted now and not wait a year before receiving a bill for 100 euros that originally was 20 euros!! And having just received a 15 euro fine relating to 2008, along with half the Algarve, you have to wonder what is next!!!!
Any help gratefully received !!

I drove back to the airport in late September and have not been invoiced for the trip yet, I used Zitauto for the hire car, who by the way were fine.

You will receive a letter at home.
FYI
Post Payment
Payment System Post-paid (only for vehicles with Portuguese registered license plates)
The post-payment is a photo-tolling system tolling (recognition of license plate taken by the road equipment) valid exclusively for vehicles with Portuguese registered license plate.
The payment is only available 48 hours after using the motorway.
Payment at Post Offices CTT, PayShop Agents
The customer has 5 business days for payment to be available 48 hours after the passage.
Payment at ATM
Payment of tolls by a reference at ATM or Homebanking.
The ATM reference can only be created 48 hours after using the motorways.
You send a SMS to 68989 with the following text
CTTMB XX-XX-XX, being XX-XX-XX your license plate. The SMS has the cost of 0,30€.
You’ll receive an SMS with the information of the reference, entity and value of the payment, as well as the deadline to pay tolls that can be paid at the moment of the SMS sending.
The receipts of the paid tolls are available 48 hours after the payment at
http://portagens.ctt.pt/Receipts.
All you have to do is insert the license plate and the payment proof number given at the confirmation SMS that is sent after the payment of the tolls.
If there is no tolls to pay at the time that the SMS is received in the system or if all outstanding tolls were already considered for a reference order, the client will receive an SMS reply with the information that there are no tolls payable or that was generated a payment reference for tolls due.

very informative post DeLorean, which just explains how complicated the system is.
Tolls:
a) put the money into the bucket
b) post pay (or pre pay) by going into almost any shop and giving the registration of the car and the amount you wish to post pay ( or pre pay)
simples.
Pato, for what it worth I think sending letters to various countries around Europe looking for late payment for tolls is an urban myth. If not it's certainly very funny, won't even get back enough to cover the postage.

I've heard no stories of letters dropping onto UK doormats.
There is no financial sense in spending 10 euros in admin costs to try and recover a 5 euro unpaid fine.
BUT....having said that....knowing the Portuguese bureaucratic central government mindset....it wouldn't surprise me if they did!!

It would be unpaid tolls from previous hirers and either you insist on paying the tolls for your dates or you ignore the tolls all together. The post office might be better for partial payments.
