Carvoeiro is known for being a family favourite during the summer months thanks to the variety of restaurants, accommodation and of course, the easy to access Carvoeiro beach – but the beach may be facing closure for 15 days during the summer for sand replenishment project.

For many months the prospect of the beach being replenished with sand has been on the cards but only now does this project appear to be coming to fruition with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) stating that works on seven beaches in the Algarve, including on Carvoeiro beach, is due to start in June.

According to a report by the Portuguese news agency Lusa, the regional director of the APA Sebastião Teixeira has said that the smaller beaches needing work for sand replenishment may need to be closed for up to 15 days if the works coincide with the peak summer period.

The beaches that are part of the sand replenishment project are Carvoeiro, Benagil, Noa and Cova Redonda in the Lagoa area and then Castelo and Coelha beaches in Albufeira and finally Dona Ana beach in Lagos.

Sebastião Teixeira added that the works are to take place on these specific beaches because of the cliffs that surround them and that the increase of sand should “provide a natural defense to the direct impact of the waves at the base of the cliffs and increase the safe areas of the beaches.”

He added: “We anticipate that the works will take place in June at the start of the bathing season, they will not be going on during September, October and November.”

The bids for the works are now coming to a conclusion with the project representing an investment of 2.1 million euros and an estimated time of completion of four months.

When this was done on the main beach at Albufeira a few years ago, tens thousands of large very sharp sea shells were dredged up with the sand.
This made the wearing of some form of shoe wear essential if you wanted to avoid the risk of cuts fo some time.

understand the need for this following the weather over the past few months however I fail to see the logic of doing this during June and into July. From a country & region that certainly needs the Summer tourists to prosper, the timing of this seems odd.

It has to be done when the sea is calm otherwise apart from the dangers to the dredgers the sand would just get washed away again.

If was an april fools joke it was certainly accurate, the beaches in the Algarve have taken a terrific battering this winter including last weeks storm.
I have seen some photos taken n the last few days of beaches around Albufeira where rocks not seen for years are now exposed.

As recently as last September, those annoying fine shell fragments were still a nuisance on the Albufeira beaches. Looks like they are here to stay and it's highly likely that the same will happen in CVO if the sea bed materials are the same in that area.
If they use the Albufeira method it will involve a dredger anchored a few hundred metres off-shore, pumping sand from the sea bed onto the beach via large diameter pipes.
Carvoeiro beach is a lot smaller and it is arguable that sand could be brought in on lorries and tipped onto the beach, but it's probably unlikely considering the disruption to traffic this could cause.

Hi, I have been reading this forum on and off for the last few years but this is my first post.

I was curious if there have been any developments with the dates of the beach closures in the Carvoeiro area (particulalry Carvoeiro beach itself) as we are arriving on 1st July for 10 days? We can't wait as this is the third year in a row, but keen to know the beach situation.

They could have a filter on the end of the pipe, collect the shells and rework them, for manure or something like that? you gotta pick a pocket or two,oo,oo.

As far as we know, it will be closed as stated, have no further information from anyone.
At least the Village will be quiet.

I heard that they had seen sense and delayed this until after the holiday season. Not sure if this is accurate.

Apart from one article in tomorrowcarvoeiro which was published on April 1st, has any body seen any other announcement concerning this incredibly major event in the area ?

The original Tomorrow Carvoeiro article was published on the 2nd of April (not 1st), another article here http://portugalresident.com/seven-beach ... -collapses. It was in the news back in December.

If it is to go ahead I've heard it will now be in September, although so far I haven't found any sources to back that up
