Mean shops not cafés but proper walk in shops) green grocers and maybe a deli. Shops where locals could visit rather than supermarkets. To be able to go into the village to do food shopping like a normal town. We often go in early morning for a coffee but it would be nice to be able to 'shop' as well, it would make it much busier during the winter. Just a thought .... Any investors out there? I know it's the way if the world and the supermarkets have taken over. But it's a shame

Well rumour has it that the building site next door to ALDI at Fatacil is to be a new branch of Apolonia.... The Algarves own Waitrose!

Talk about ying and yang....Apolonia and ALDI on the same site.......and only a 100 metres from Pingo Doce, and 500 metres from Intermarche!!

There used to be all of these years ago, butchers,(now Carvoeiro Bar) fish mongers,(Happys) tea shop, (Hemmingways) a deli ( jewellers) but we are in the modern world when most people want to go and get there shopping done in one go, not spend ages buying a bit here and a bit there. Alright for those with time to fill but not for the average family.

Gradually all these small shops had to close as they could not survive on the income from the ' got all day ' type of shopper. Of course you could use those small shops that still survive in the Market up Restaurant hill sure that would be perfect to combine with an early morning coffee.

Inside the Municipal Market there is a (real) butcher and also a little Deli that sells cheeses and some other small delicacies.
The butcher counter in Pingo Doce takes some beating.

So we're not tooooo badly off.

Drive out to Lagoa.....butchers, fresh veg & fish all by the market there......and a good baker/cake maker on the Carvoeiro " In" road

I'm not explaining myself very well am I. I just meant that if there were some everyday grocery shops in the town, people would congregate there more in the winter. I'm not complaining about the quality of the supermarkets more the lack of hustle and bustle in the winter

ah well, that's different.....you get the hussle & bussle in the supermarkets,but that's impersonal.....try the more intimate restaurants ( eg Escondidinho where you invariably chat with your neighbour) ...or come on one of my walks!

When we come we always shop in the market little shops and have coffee with the locals in the little cafe there. Tis good fun and they are mega helpful and friendly.
The butcher there is superb as is the bread lady.
The butcher gave me a lift up the hill last time too.

The original post mentions bakers, don't forget 'Papa & Companhia' on Rua do Farol next to Brady's, we always go there for bread, croissants, cakes etc, Always friendly and helpful and the produce is excellent.

I love the original Portuguese 1 day rolls, very tasty, very sweet, can't seem to get them now, I think they made them in the baker shop in the "in road" a few years back, you had to get there early in the morning though and for me that was an effort so I had to delegate to purchase them.

', I thought it would be an excellent idea to have more children in middle age therefore I don't have a problem with being up at daft o'clock. Anyway enough talk of exotic patisserie, remember those of us having to slum it here in the north. Must go now, just nipping out to Bett'ys......
