Given that the fox hunting debate is likely to be a bit serious - how about a lighter view on the subject.

I propose a total ban on caravanning for the following reasons -

1. I don't do it
2. I don't see the point in it.
3. I don't really like the people that do it (I havn't met many but I don't think I would like them if I did)
4. They clog up the road going slowly when I want to go somewhere quickly.
5. They are environmentally unfriendly (I can't really give any hard facts to prove this but it must be true)
6. I can't afford one and don't have the land to keep one on - therefore it is the preserve of people better off than me.

Since it is only enjoyed by a minority of the population I propose to petition Tony Blair to get this outdated and archaic mode of holidaying banned altogether.

Anyone got anything else that they can justifiably ban (yes, I am aware that golf will appear rather rapidly)

How proposterous and utterly selfish of you.

As a "Man with a van" myself, I find your suggestion outrgageous and insulting. If you have never owned a van yourself, and don't know anyone that does, then how can you possibbly justify your claims about the small minority of happy go lucky caravaners.

As one of the uninformed, you being way to hasty in condeming a group of people who love driving their Austin Princesses (tow car of the year in 1975) at 45 MPH down the A30 on a bank holiday. Happy in the knowledge that they have five mile tailback behind them (as opposed to in front of them). Now who is the stupid one eh?

And when you get to wind swept Bodmin moor, you can drop your stabilisers, connect up your chemical toilet, and put on the kettle for a nice fresh cup of tea. Heaven.

After a nice pasty warmed up in the built in microwave (Sprite Continental optional extra), you can convert the dining table into a nice comfortable double bed, where you can snuggle down under your patchworj quilt that your aunty made, and listen to the rain pitter patting on the roof all night.

In the morning you can take your chemi toilet to the "processing center" and join a lot of other lovely caravaners for a cold shower on muddy fllors in a concrete shower block.

Now, that we are talking caravans how about ooinions on the new Sprite Continental 6 berth model with a built in wardrobe that holds six anoraks, so you can bring up to five other anoraks with you.

Who needs Portugal.

Guest (1) - Thank you for the informative defense - may I suggest you aquire a toilet tent to go with your Sprite - cuts down on unnecessary trips to the toilet block, and provides hours of amusement for other 'vanners' when used with the sun behind you showing stylish silhouttes, or even more fun in windy conditions wondering when it will disappear leaving you sat there in the elements as nature intended while the tent flies off over the distant horizon.

Never was sure exactly where it is..just looked and all I could find was one in South Atlantic..is that it?Do they allow caravans there (how would you get it there )..Ive no doubt theres golf..of course

Yes he sure was and if you haven't been to Elba you gotta go, it's one of the most beautiful places I have been, very similar to Cape Town.

As for getting to St Helena, you used to be able to take the RMS St Helena from Cape Town (and yes that is Royal Mail Ship for the uninformed ).
