Again off topic : You could always pop into the Refugio shop at the end of Carvoeiro on the road out towards Intermarche,on the left had side, just before the newish restaurant right at the end, whose name escapes me at the moment. I have started a new post so we dont have to keep going off topic as seriously, security is an important issue for people, especially those who dont live here permanently.

The apartment i rent is covered by prosecem security , and I am very impressed , even when building works were happening locally and the electric cables were cut ( TYPICAL ) , the guys were then in under 15 mins , checked and secured the apartment.
When there have been power cuts , I will always return to all doors locked and a little note of explanation. I also have electronic shutters and a brilliant dog , who barks if anyone approaches mine or neighbours homes. (luckily she isnt a constant barker ).
Some good little security tips as I mentioned last year are ... gravel , for the non silent approach , making sure that if you go out for the day you lock your gates shut .
Immediately you enter your residence you put valuables out of sight , as you unpack your car you are distracted and vunerable.
Keys need to be near locked doors at night , but not visible ( you and the family should know in case of emergency )so tha tif somebody does get in they then cant re enter or steal your hire car.
Be prepared to stare at people , there is nothing more unnerving to a crook than eye contact , so anybody you see in the vicinity make them aware you have spotted them , you dont have to be hostile they may be innocent , but watch them anyway .
When out and about ladies hold onto your bags , dont put them down at the checkout , keep them on or under your arm , if long strap wear at the front. Gents that passport and wallet are very visible in your back pocket and it only takes a pickpocket one push against you to move them while the next pusher takes.
Okay front pocket looks daft but you sure as hell notice if somebody starts pushing you there ( at least I hope you do !! ) , or one of the neck wallets with the string that then gets put down the front of the shirt. Not fashionable but who cares.

You can contact Pedro Calado on mobile 00351 917770437 (he is the local sales person/surveyor) or visit http://www.securitasdirect.pt. Securitas have wireless systems and the command module has a sim card to communicate so even if the power is off and the phone line cut the alarm will trigger.. You can have wireless cameras that SMS pictures of the intruders to Securitas and if you set off the alarm by mistake the control centre taliks to you through the command module and you give the password. We have such a system and are very happy with it. Being wireless the installation is simple and you can add smoke alarms. Pedro speaks good English which is a help when talking about the technical issues. Securitas even monitor the battery levels and come to change them before they expire!!!
