EDP electricity

We have received an email from EDP that seems to say the company is being wound up and restarted only for business users. An article in the Algarve Daily News by AFPOP seems to confirm this:

Anyone know how you find out who to 'switch' to? It easy in the UK as there are countless web sites to assist but does anything like that exist in Portugal?

I assume that most people are with EDP, so this sounds like a recipe for total confusion.

Thanks for bringing this up. Seems like we will have to take some action, but for most Villa owners here..

The cut off dates for changing supplier are between January 1st 2013 and December 31st 2015

So no need to panic just yet

I wonder if there is any price comparison service (like uSwitch) emerging to fill an obvious gap ?

There are millions of 'residential' customers in Portugal and I have no doubt that if 'we' don't nominate a company 'we' will be 'sold' on to one of the providers listed, but maybe in time we will be able to find a company that suits our needs better than an other company. I assume that in time we will get advice from various forums (including this one) which will inform us of the differing tariffs. my experience is that switching companies is swings and roundabouts unless you are willing to change on a yearly basis. I base this on my experience of a) home insurance b)car insurance c) banks d) electricty deregulation ( in Ireland anyway)

Dont panic

At the moment the choice is EDP or EDP there is no market and that is one reason the cost is so high. When there are new entrants you will be spoilt for choice so wait and see.........

When I received the same notification (by e-mail!), I was rather encouraged as I took the main topic of the message to be a deregulation of the market - which can only be a good thing for the punter.

Credit where Credit is due.
We lost our power supply this morning, It was reported to EDP around 10.20. the emergency response crew arrived around 11.00am and the board repaired and reconnected by 11.30am.
I cannot believe that we would have received as similar response from EDF in the UK.
For one thing they probably would have said that the internal board was nothing to do with them .
Sometimes it is easy to forget that the high levels of service that can be provided in Portugal.

There is already a choice of 6 energy providers. We tried a simulation with 3 and EDP worked out cheapest!

interesting to hear we have multiple choice of electricity suppliers now,how long have theses been available?i did not have a clue that there was anybody else other than EDP.have these new suppliers just come on the scene or is it that they have not publicised it ?can anybody give me the names & possibly web sites for these companies so we can do a comparison

The first phase of the deregulation of Electricity tarifs begins 1st July 2012. Not sure what that means but that's what the ERSE (electricity regulation and services) says.

Ahhh! the actual statement - translated says :-

"Enters its final phase on July 1st 2012, with the phasing out of regulated tariffs for all consumers........The model of gradual extinction rates of the retail market aims to create conditions so that traders can provide electricity and natural gas in the context of effective competition, boosting customers transition to the liberalized market.

Well that gets my vote!

the OP would imply that EDP is being wound down and restarted for business users only. I did not receive this email (I receive one email per annum from EDP, in June, which details my usage over the past 12 months, shows direct debits, and adjusts next years deductions based on previous usage - which I can then re-adjust if I so choose)

I assume that EDP is not in fact being wound down but merely entering the competitive market in order to retain market share, or is this too simple an explanation?

EDP's website - bearing in mind the number of non nationals they have on their books- is not very user friendly.
