Re: PRACTICAL solutions to loss of TV Reception
Hi Widge
I am getting between 10 and 12Mbps with MEO Internet (was Sapo but now rebranded by PT). The engineer told me that Sesmarias may well get upgraded soon. Until recently the speed here was about 1 Mbps.
Here's hoping for all of you in that area.

Re: PRACTICAL solutions to loss of TV Reception
I can’t speak highly enough of ProjectionDreams; on the strength of pickwick’s post we went over to Almancil last Wednesday, saw the system and paid a deposit then and there. Alistair hoped to get more boxes delivered early this week and, subject to that, expected to be able to install our system tomorrow, Wednesday, 19th. We had a phone call today, Tuesday, asking whether he could install this evening! Now done and dusted and it’s first rate – as good as it was on their demo system.
What a pleasure doing business with people who under promise and over deliver!!

We too had help from Pickwick and are already fortunate enough to have good broadband speed. Just need to purchase the apple box and let the punters use our old ipad. This means finally i persuade hubby to let me upgrade.

"Punters" at Casa Tranquila ?????? Surely not LICY, Time to change your marketing campaign & attract a more refined clientele or the iPad will be in a clients suitcase before Easter !LICY wrote:We too had help from Pickwick and are already fortunate enough to have good broadband speed. Spoke to Alastair yesterday, seems like a pleasant & knowledgable chap. Awaiting response from PT Telecom about MEO upgrade in Sesmarias as current broadband a bit patchy.pickwick wrote:Hi Widge

Re: PRACTICAL solutions to loss of TV Reception
Hiya,
This system sounds good and hope it works well.
Now I need some direction re internet, tv, phone lines and Sky and thought this thread might help me rather than starting a new thread, so here goes.
We are thinking of renting a flat for a year in Portugal from Sept next year either in CVO or in Cabanas de Tavira where it is much flatter for me.( May well stay much longer if it works out after a 12 month trial period and if Richard finds enough work as an Accountant)
When we move here we shall need Sky tv package and I suppose we will have to put in a dish etc. We shall also need a telephone line I suppose for internet etc.
As I run an oil group I would like to continue this but I need a BT line or the like, is there a way of getting something that would allow people from the UK to contact me cheaply by phone and me contacting the oil companies in the UK by phone cheaply.
I am on a package here in the UK which is a bundle which covers my Sky TV, Internet/Broadband and phone including o844 nos etc free. Yes tis expensive at altogether £85 per month but that is because we have a 3D/HD TV, sports and stuff and with my health issues this really is my entertainment.
So I hope some person will come up with a solution/ideas, or you may suggest I contact Alistair with his company when we come out at the end of March .
Many thanks ahead of time with any useful ideas and solutions as I am desperate to get out here for a real good length of time.

A new thread might be better. At least therein all the answers to your questions will be easier to find instead of having to trawl through this one.baggysallyjane wrote:....Now I need some direction re internet, tv, phone lines and Sky and thought this thread might help me rather than starting a new thread, so here goes......

Re: PRACTICAL solutions to loss of TV Reception
Hi Baggysallyjane
You will have seen from the long exchanges on this matter that getting Sky (legally - if at all) in Portugal is a non-starter. They (Sky) have 'pulled-the-plug'.
Be guided by Pickwick's solution and you won't go wrong.
With regards to inexpensive telephone connection - you could consider using Skype. It can be 'hit 'n miss' with the reception but it is a solution and it is cheaper than PT. You can get yourself a Skype number but there is a cost.
I suspect Pickwick will come to your aid (he's good like that) with a step-by-step practical reply.

Re: PRACTICAL solutions to loss of TV Reception
Hi
Many many thanks
I shall await PW's reply as a very simple step by step is needed for me as this has been one of my main stumbling blocks for coming out for a mega long visit.
As my health is sxxt everyone says I will be much better coming out to spend a longer period of time and this will help us to see if we can manage to do this as Richard still needs to be able to work and the extra money I get in for running the oil syndicate covers phones/tv/internet/ etc.

Re: PRACTICAL solutions to loss of TV Reception
Hi Baggysallyjane
You may have read on the Forum that you can get unlimited 3G (mobile network) in the Algarve with unlimited download and no loss of speed. That is wrong! All mobile internet 3G data deals are limited to 15GB per month and then you get slowed down.
The solution to be able to view UK TV is to have a high speed unlimited download internet connection. This needs to be 5Mbps or more to give you a decent quality picture and still be able to use the internet at the same time. Two options for the Internet are:-
A: Fixed line from PT (MEO) at around 35€ per month including line rental, free installation, a cordless phone and a wireless router for 12Mbps and unlimited downloads. You need to get PT to check the speed available in your villa. You can e-mail Miguel Rosado e-mail tz003881@telecom.pt he works in the MEO store in Algarve Shopping for help.
B: Optimus have a 4G package available on WoW called net fixa (mobile but limited to your choice of three post code areas) which is 20Mbs with unlimited downloads for 24.99€ per month. For an additional 6.99€ per month you get UNLIMITED land line calls to Portugal and the rest of the EU. The wireless adapter costs 49.50€. You need to get Optimus to check the speed in your area. http://www.wow.pt
With regard to customers reaching you (depending on which mobile network you are on you can get a package so you can recieve the calls for free and your customers call your UK mobile as part of their bundle or at normal UK mobile to mobile rates. An alternative is to get a Skype UK landline number (you can choose the area code) and divert that number on Skype to your Portuguese landline number (it will cost you 1.2p per minute to recieve and your customer will not know you are in Portugal and the call is routed over land lines so no call quality issues).
So in order to watch UK TV. When you have high speed unlimited internet get a box from Alistair at 150€ and 18€ per month (in my view the most user friendly option) or buy Apple TV (small box around £90) and if you have an iPad or iPod or i Phone download the Filmon App, register for free and then you can watch live UK TV through the Apple TV box on your TV and hundreds of other channels as well but a bit fiddly.
Please feel free to ask for any more detail if you need it. PM me or ask on here whichever suits!
Keep well

Pickwick - well done. You can always be relied upon for no-nonsense advice
Can you confirm that Sky in any form is a no-go?

Hi Shanagarry
Not heard if anyone has tried Skygo from Portugal using hidemyass but suspect Sky will lock the supply to the IP address of a particular PC but not 100% sure.
Pickwick
PS The IPTV is now working in all my rooms via a smart box router I installed!!!
