Insurance

Post by Graham »

Another Abbey national moan to start with

When I got my mortgage with Abbey National they arranged the property insurance as it was a condition of the mortgage.

I have finally got through, after six weeks, four emails and nine telephone calls, to a helpful guy at Abbey Offshore (name is Ron Crouch - seemed efficient AND apologetic), who informs me that they do not arrange insurance any more, and that in fact my insurance lapsed in February. I would not know this since the premium is added to the mortgage and only shows on the statement in December. They did not think that it was important to tell me that it had lapsed!

So firstly, if anyone has a mortgagte and insurance with Abbey, check it is still in force!

Secondly, I now need to arrange insurance PDQ - does anyone have any suggestions for an efficient broker or insurance company?

Thanks in advance

Before you make a decision, make sure there is a english translation of the policy. We have a ploicy with would you believe "Lusitania" with an office in Lagoa, the translation is very important. It was sold to them by Royal Sun Alliance ayear or so ago.

Graham ,

They did thsi tome aswell. They are so so poor. I heard today that they are shutting down the Portugal office. Hooray!! They obviosuly can't get their heads around the new regs and so have taken the ewasy way out. Typical!!!!

You should try Victoria Seguros in Lisbon - formally Commercial Uniom. the chap there is Marcus Martins. I will post the number when back in the office on Monday - he is a jolly helful chap.

Dear all - thanks for the helpful replies.

I contacted Marcus Martins who was not only extremely helpful, he managed to almost immediately locate my policy and confirm that it was paid! - yet again some fantastically worthless information from the Abbey National  , but at least I know who to deal with in future. :D
