Estrangeiro car road fund tax

Post by roy4eyes »

It is illegal to keep a non-Portuguese car in Portugal for more than 180 days per year.

If you do keep a non-Portuguese car in Portugal for more than 180 days per year you must pay Portuguese road tax !!!

How do these two statements match up ?

The answer according to Finanças is that it is a 'grey' area and, provided you have a road tax disc showing, it is 'unlikely' the police will take any action. Naturally you must have valid insurance and IPO (MOT) inspection.

The cost for a 2.0 - 2.4 litre car is €61.15 which compares favourably to the UK tax of £160 or the cost of matriculating an old car.

I hope this will help those of you who may have previously been driving around (at best) semi-legally.

Well it tells us the age of your car anyway. Full tax for a post 95 car with that size engine is €127 ...... although I know someone with an early 70's Fiat. He pays €6 a year

Where would one purchase the aforementioned road tax? and what documents are required, assuming the car is british registered?

Please advise

I'm not entirely certain since I have a Port. reg. car. I know it can be done at the Financas and that it is not possible online because their database obviously only includes Portruguese cars. It is possible that the other normal outlets do it as well but I'm not sure. You need a slightly different form which you need to get and complete first( which costs a few cents) before you line up with your docs to pay; called modelo n° 4 – série “Veículo estrangeiro". You then need test cert, registration docs and insurance docs. A packed lunch is also advisable

Thanks for the info.

Where do I get the form "modelo n° 4 – série “Veículo estrangeiro"?
What are "the other normal outlets" that you mention?

I assume if the car is new I don't need the test cert and only need provide registration and insurance docs.

Kind Regards

I went to the finanças ofice in Lagoa and the only documentation required was the U.K. registration documents.

There was only one person in front of me - I taxed our portuguese car and the U.K. one and was in and out of the building within 10 minutes.

The dark haired guy, probably 40ish speaks excellent English - the lady not so good.

Form from the Financas. In some offices you can get these at one desk and complete before you join the queue to pay.You should complete registration number, engine size etc (The fee is partly based on engine size up to a max of €300 ish) from your docs before you get to the head of the line if you want to stay popular.

In some areas newsagents issue the stamp. I'm told that Staples Office supply shops are issuing them this year. Before you could do online payment I used to do mine in the Lottery Shop in Faro. I always thought it appropriate in that driving in PT can be a bit of a lottery anyway.

If they are being "picky" you may be asked for a "certificate of conformity" which proves your new car meets EEC standards. This can usually be found in your car handbook. A copy should suffice

I feel Al Garb is complicating matters.

I repeat - at Lagoa finanças - the only documentation required was the U.K. registration form for our U.K. car.

The alternatives he quotes are for re-taxing a Portuguese plated car.
