Making a WILL in Portugal

This is morbid stuff - but nonetheless very relevant at this stage in our lives but I suppose if we both go together - then the boys would be the rightful beneficiaries (at least in our case they would).

So it looks like a big bill for legal fees next month then....... deep joy

We were advised that as a property owner in Portugal it is mandatory to make a Portuguese will, if not probate can take a hell of a long time, and be very expensive.

I understand that the terms of a British will do not necessarily apply under Portuguese law.

When we bought our property 2 years ago our lawyer said we didn't need a will if our property was being passed onto our two daughters after our death. He said that in Portugal property was automatically passed on to your children.

Thats correct but not all of it - some is held by the state if there is no will. The problem is some people dont want to leave it to their children - the dogs and cats home was probably better accomodation.
