They were out in the orchard next to us yesterday in driving rain trying to salvage what they can of the crop.

We have received an email from Rocha Brava today to say that rain has penetrated into
our villa with this dreadful weather and wind. We don`t yet know how bad it is, fingers crossed
it isn`t too bad, I don`t think I have ever known a December and January be as bad as this has
been and we have been visiting now for 25 years.

only kept a record since xmas...to date 11.75 inches.

guess we have had the annual rainfall total (about 20 inches) from middle of december until now

Reports in the PT press that december was the wettest and warmest for 100 years, Portugal has also had its share of closed roads and schools.

Recent rainfall ensures bountiful water supplies

Due to the amount of near incessant rain that fell during the latter half of December, weather experts are predicting that 2010 should run its course without droughts, water shortages or restrictions, even in the height of summer.

For the past ten months Portugal has been registering below-average water resources, leaving the country in a position of technical drought between March and November last year. During that period, 29 percent of national territory was classified as experiencing “severe drought”.

However, that ended with the heavy December rains, leading the National Water Institute (Inag) to assure this year there will be no restrictions placed on water usage.

“Any possible restrictions on water usage during 2010 have been dismissed”, Orlando Borges, President of Inag, said.

He assured the public that, even during summer, there will be no restriction on water usage in the fishing or farming industries, for electricity production or to public supplies.

Moreover, the possibility of a drought in Portugal this year has been totally cast aside thanks to the rain that fell in the past two months, particularly in December, when reservoirs across the country reached their fullest in recent times.

In the latest newsletter posted by Inag, relative to the month of December, it was revealed that 24 of the country’s 56 water deposits are currently at over 80 percent full, surpassing the highest average of the past two decades.

“But the fact that we have said there will be no restrictions imposed this year does not mean the Portuguese should not use water resourcefully”, Orlando Borges warned.

Adérito Serrão, president of the National Met Office (IM) said: “A drought situation has disappeared from almost all of the country, with just a few slight drought-affected areas remaining in some parts of southern Portugal”.

He described the amount of rain that fell in December as “unusual” and “out of the ordinary for the past 30 years”.

“In December we had abnormal rainfall of 70 millimetres and in some parts of the country it was 200 percent more than the average for the past 30 years”, Adérito Serrão added.

Predictions for this month are that the rain will continue, with low temperatures and instability regarding the weather, though the sun should finally make a more permanent appearance starting this weekend
