Where are the buyers going to come from?

Recently I found myself agreeing with the guest who held no punches by speaking the truth. However, failed to understand the importance on the person naming her or himself. Guest or nickname what's the difference? Or am I missing something?
I think all would agree on wishing tbbr good luck and hope escapes any real problems, settles down in the Algarve and finds as he or she states a well paid job (I am very tempted to make comment on the latter) but will reframe from doing so. If only someone had told my wife and I some home truths prior to and on our arrival in the Algarve, it would most certainly have saved us a lot of heart ache and expense.
Not sure what point "Witch" (English translation) was attempting with regard having to be an expert in computers for a local forum?
I hope that I have misundertood but it would appear that guests are not welcome. Computer experts are. Truth is taboo. Find me a hole and I will put my head in it. Any other non expert computer guest who does not have an opinion are welcome to join me. The Algarve is beautiful, but in any paradise there are the down sides and that for sure is reality here.

In addittin to " where are the buyers coming from " perhaps there should also be a strapline of " what are they coming here for ??.
We and many of our contemporaries are of that age and " yes " have had the good fortune to be at that time in life to contemplate " jumping "off the corporate treadmill.
Having worked for over 35 years putting it simply many of us have had enough.
Employers have no loyalty and the Uk economy is heading for major meltdown.
So we do not expect to mainain our incomes or even close to it but neither would we have any major out goings.
As we all did in our student years or when first married we buy only what we need, replace only when worn out etc.
These are the real reasons for the " move to the sun "
Our parents had/have bingo and tea dances we will have golf an Led Zepplin

Do you really honestly believe that it is any different in Portugal, than anywhere else in the world. The corruption here is rife and despite EU rules with little protection, people caring less about each other, others trying to stop others speaking out......and as for employers in the Algarve "cheap labour".........i.e. an eye doctor and similar working as waiters etc..... why because the "poor" Portuguese cannot see further than their "own individual bank accounts in Maderia and the rest. Other Europeans coming to Portugal with dreams and wishing to contribute to Portugal. Some learning Portuguese, but despite "English" as the international voice, Goverment Depts, will not deal in any shape or form in "English". Yes Portugal is in the EU and has had more than its fair share of funds. How many remember the motorway delay to Espana and the cause..........
Golf and Zepplin, what more can one say except as the writer states, he was a student. Therefore, one would have thought his presentation, spelling and common sense after 35yrs on being on some sort of treadmill ,that he would have been able to ........ : But it is true that you do have the sun and beaches....well that is at the moment beaches
...........but maybe in the future.....more holes and rock groups just what the Algarve is short of....B'dorm (been there before I believe)........
..............sorry wildlife and those of us who wish to sleep, put cotton wool in your ears and helmets on before climbing into the hole alongside other "guests" and "name users" with common sense.....why....to protect heads from "white extremely hard pitted balls and to muffle the noise......rock on "T" ommy......... life as we use to know is doomed.

dear Guest ( I now share others opinions of those who regularly enter as guests but I suspect use this label as a nom de guerre ).
Have never been to Benidorm or anywhere like it but do I detect a little predjudice against those who are now moving to the algarve ??
As I have already indicated I have yet to hear from the many we have met and have regular contact with the views so often expressed on this forum.
Many speak some or are trying to learn Portuguese, the do not expect as guests in a country for the systems and authorities to cater for them as a small minority.

Could write another long essay on this, as lots of ideas going round in my head again...BUT it is midnight and I am toooooo tired and had a long somewhat stressful day.
However, just one quick opinion regarding your earlier question tbbr...i.e. "what are they coming for?"...it has got to be the sun, sun and sun... because if it was for a slower pace of life, cheaper cost of living, less crime, safer environment and all those other reasons people often quote for moving to Portugal...then they would go to other regions in Portugal e.g the north/inland, where it is a lot cheaper than the Algarve for properties, food is cheaper and the life is even slower, tranquil and traditional.
One other observation is that the British congregating in the Algarve and the Costas are no different to other "minority groups" in other countries who tend to congregate in certain areas e.g. Asians in towns like Luton and Crawley in the UK. Safety in numbers I suppose

As with most things comparisons are relative, The algarve that we and other " newcomers " know is cheaper, quieter, more secure, safer etc than life in the UK.
I doubt that many of you spend 2-3 hrs day just getting to work " EVERY DAY " or face the risks of ever increasing anti social behaviour every time you go into any city or town centre at night.
We all look back at the past with " rose tinted " glasses and I accept that established residents may view the changes with less than full approval.
As to " ex pat " ghettos please let me know where they are so we can avoid them.
If we ever move satellite TV is not a priority as we have years of videos and DVD,s to watch because up to now there has never been enough time.
That is the most important thing we look forward to " TIME " to ourselves.

Ask yourself if the Algave/Portugal is so cheap why are there 250.000 plus Portuguese permantly residing and working in the UK and just as many in France and Spain etc. Given the numbers do you think that it could be for a better standard of living.
We are not guests in Portugal or anywhere else in Europe i.e. we are E.U.Members and those of us that are declared "residents" contribute a considerable amount to Portugal. Whether or not someone speaks Portuguese or any other here in Portugal is not the point. Like it or not English was the agreed international "choice" and like so many matters here in Portugal, some Portuguese choose for the own purpose not to appear to understand which strangly enough seems to be Government Departments. In comparision UK Government Departments bend over backward in several lanuages to assist those non speaking English and many of our friends from other countries who are resident here totally agree.

Yer guest, I thought I heard it was about 300,000 but could be wrong. I know there is a large population in East Anglia e.g Norfolk etc
Portugal is relatively cheap for the British and maybe for some other Northern Europeans but for the Portuguese it is really very expensive. I still don't know how they live, when an average wage is 500 Euros a month and the food in the supermarkets is not much difference in price from the UK. I know a lot of them have credited themselves up to their eyeballs and those that live near the border go to Spain to shop but I still wonder how they manage
I remember saying on a forum topic a long time ago that Europe is becoming quite interesting, in that loads of Northern Europeans are moving to Spain, Portugal, Canaries etc etc, together with a lot of Eastern Europeans and loads of Portuguese are moving to the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland etc. Strange innit? Perhaps one day we will truly be just one big European melting pot.
Don't agree with the language thing though...not being able to communicate with people around you can be a serious problem and I personally would hate to live somewhere and not be able to understand what is going on around me. It was funny that this week on the TV they said a contributing factor to the antagonism between British Muslims and British British (for want of better terms) is that there are still a large number of Muslims and Asians that don't speak English after many years of living in the UK. The other day I was at the council in Silves and overheard a Portuguese guy talking to an English couple in English and was all smiles and charm. The English couple said "oh, what a charming man, so helpful" and I heard him say to his mate "Bloody stupid English people" (roughly translated...it was actually a little bit worse than that).

How many Brits live in Algarve then? And how many of them speak Portuguese (I mean can really communicate)? about two of them!
They think the Portuguese are sweet … oldest allies and all that …. so there is no real need to learn the weird lingo, is there?
Don’t most expats live in a closed condominium or in parts where Portuguese residents are outnumbered? And to be honest, I can’t blame them, as most of them have as much chance of fully-integrating with the natives as the Portuguese do in England

Well said bruxihna,
We the english are probably one of the worst nations to integrate with others although we demand that immigrants to the uk must conform.
Ie. Speak our language
attend our schools
Use our commercial and business practices
Accept our social standards and ways of behaviour however strange or offensive.
Pay our taxes and accept our laws and regulations without arguement.
BUT when we move abroad ???
At a drinks party earlier this year we met a very nice woman who has lived in the algarve for almost 20 years, does not speak any portuguese or ever tried to learn.
We heard all the horror stories, how they only had english friends, the protuguese were not that friendly etc etc.
I wonder why ??
M4 blocked in two places, 20miles slow traffic on M5 , typical friday.
Roll on end of august when we are back feeling ripped off when we buy decent wine for a couple of pound /bottle, KG large prawns for less than £14 = less than£1/portion and so on.
