False MOT certificates
False MOT certificates
i had heard for some time that there was someone offering UK MOT certificates without the car being checked at all . Now it seems, if its the same people they have been caught. I wonder where those who have got these certificates stand, if there is an accident?

Re: False MOT certificates
It has been illegal for some time to issue MOT certificates for cars not viewed at a UK test centre, thus any documents got without the car being in the UK test centre, is invalid and as such, it is a criminal offence to drive a car relying on the document. Insurance would also, of course, be invalid. I would advise anyone with such a document, not to drive their car at all, until they do it properly.

They've got a property in Portimao, and they're wrinklies, won't tell you their names, don't want to offend shanagarry.
Re: False MOT certificates
Are these the same people who used to advertise in the Algarve Resident and Portugal News ( says a lot for the policy of these two newspapers ) ???
Re: False MOT certificates
their names are on the daily mail news report which I gave a link to
Re: False MOT certificates
Hi all,
I noticed these adverts, clearly illegal, nice easy paper trail. It was only a matter of time before there was the early morning knock at the door.
It looks like a can of worms about to opened, not just for the suppliers but also the people who purchased them.
Regards,
Frank

Re: False MOT certificates
It just makes you wonder why the local english newspapers have allowed the adverts in the first place, as EMM says it doesn't say much for them does it. I should imagine if the GNR have knowledge of this finding they will be stopping every UK reg car to check documents.

Re: False MOT certificates
My son reported this racket to the UK police 2 years ago - they didn't want to know. They said it was out of their jurisdiction. So I doubt much will come of it.
Re: False MOT certificates
I would guess this scam has been investigated for some time now . With the fraud squad involved , they will have all the records of who and where the certificates were sent , the customers can expect a knock on the door any time soon by an agent from the afore mentioned fraud squad who will enjoy some time in the sun following up these enquiries .
Re: False MOT certificates
this from a poster on the expatfocus forum
as follows
"The retired couple, both in their sixties, were still regularly playing lawn bowls at Alvor until last month. They have an apartment in Alvor. Acquaintances say they also own a house in the eastern Algarve. Up until a couple of years ago, the Montgomerys were selling HP sauce, Heinz Baked Beans and other typically British delicacies through their company Monty's Online Grocery Service, MOGS for short.
They offered to take orders for products from Tesco, Sainsbury's and other British stores and deliver them to customers via 18 drop-off points right across the Algarve. A local newspaper reported that “nothing is too much trouble for the Montgomerys” and described their service as “tremendously popular, mainly with British expatriates, but with some Dutch residents as well.”
After taking part in the 2005 BLIP exhibition the Montgomerys were so enthusiastic that they declared online: “Yes, MOGS will definitely be taking a stand in 2006, we were overwhelmed by the number of contacts we made,we would like a similar position next year.”
Acquaintances described them as “a couple you either liked or disliked.” They were highly regarded by many people at the bowling club in Alvor – at least until this weekend.
Just how the Montgomerys' focus changed from MOGS to MOTs is not clear. It was the MOT business that interested police in Essex. It involved 'genuine' MOT certificates and has exposed a serious weakness in the British MOT documentation system."

Re: False MOT certificates
No doubt we will see a few more UK reg cars abandoned on waste ground, certainly there is no poimt in their taking the car back to the UK with a phony cert.
Maybe in a couple of local hostelries this is a point of discussion among some regulars
