UK TV freeview (does it work in Portugal)

Post by LICY »

I know I have spoken about TV's before, but it still seems the UK TV's are so much cheaper than Worten or Radio Popular. Looking st a 40-42" I could get a good one minus 3D for £350. All the UK TV's have freeview. When viewing such a TV in CVO having installed a digibox would the free view work? I understand you do not need to pay for SKY these days to watch the free UK TV. Is that right? LICY :?:

Licy, im not sure in built free view works as this comes through a UK digital service, we get freesat...all non chargeable UK channels plus loads of others...we got a UK TV bought separate box in CVO and it gives us all these plus we take one of our sky cards and there is a slot on our box where we can shove it in and we get all the sky channels that are chargeable...box cost E250 ...you can get a standard box with no sky card reader cheaper than this...It will be interesting to seeif anyone has got inbuilt freeview to work

NO. UK FREEVIEW DOES NOT WORK. YOU WILL NEED UK FREESAT BOX AND A DISH.
FREESAT does not give you sky subscription channels and can be a bit iffy on reception of others.
If you want to watch Sky then you will need a SKY box and a SKY subscription.

The other alternative is a PT cable connection which will give you a good range of TV channels ( many English speaking ) , phone and Internet.

I thought you could not get Sky legaly in Portugal, am I wrong, mainly I believe the problem is, because you can't be connected to the telephone. I did pay for a box and a card for use in the uk and brought it over, they kept on at me to have it connected to the phone and I just ignored it for a year or so, eventually they disconnected the service without even informing me. :(

Pato you are right, " officially " you cannot receive SKY if not in the UK.

Our replacement Sky card no longer works in PT as they are now married to their parent box. be it UK or where ever you happen to be.

Is that right Pato? We've had Sky for several years now and only had the 'phone connected for the first year. After that, I think you're entitled to remove the connection. We still have Sky and have had no problems.

After a few UK vodkas feeling very happy. Pato I don't want to spend more than I have to when the villa is finished so would prefer just to have the usual UK channels plus the free view ones. presumably' i don't need to buy SKY. LICY

Hi LICY,
Your needs seem very close to ours. We converted to a freesat box a couple of years ago, supplied by R J Tecnica in Carvoeio, and have had no problems. Reception seems to be better than when we were on Sky, and we obtain very good HD. This is with a 1.3m dish. In fact the TV reception is better than we receive in the UK. Hope this helps.

Yvette.....speak to one of the TV installers in the area....there are several, and they will give you accurate, local advice. Numbers in the Resident.

From my experience.....forget local cable TV....Cabao-visao..........you dont get even your 4 main UK channels.
You'll probably need a dish, at least 1.8M, because we are on the edge of what they call the "UK footprint", and a SKYBox with a more powerful then normal "front end".

You can get a SkyBox, and card from one of the dealers out there....it's not kosher as far as SKY are concerned....but nearly everybody works that way!!!

Whats wrong with not having the main 4 UK channels , no crap such as corrie, eastenders, hollyoakes, endless progs about moving away from the UK ( not so bad ), cookery shows, strictly, falling over on ice, Ex factor, Britains got no talent etc etc.

One big plus about cable is that as many are have sub titles in Portuguese its a way of adding to your knowledge of the language of the country that we have chosen to buy a property in.

Although I know for some on this forum and in Carvoeiro " those bloody foreigners should learn and do everything the English way " :D :D :D :D
