Floor sander

I have parquet flooring through most of my Villa and am looking at the possibility of removing the polish and varnishing instead. Does anyone know of a hire shop where I can hire a decent heavy duty sander (belt style). Or does anyone have any reccomendations for someone to do it for me! I intend to sand off the polish, reset the lose tiles, seal with deck style varnish...does anyone have experience of doing this? I'm fed up with the 'worn' look and not really durable finish that polish gives.

For a belt type floor sander the about the only place I can think of is called "Aluga Tudo" BUT its on the 125 between ALMANCIL and FARO !!

Other hire places like Maxmat etc only seem to have a small range of kit

Many thanks for the Aluga Tudo tip, I might take a look at Maxmat before I trek there though, pardon my ignorance where is Maxmat?

There is a Maxmat at Portimao but the one I use is on the 125 between Guia and the Algarve shopping - on the same side of the road - BUT I can tell you now that they dont hire floor sanders (I have their catalogue) - come to that I cant think Ive even seen belts for floor sanders there.

Ref my previous poats re floor sanders for hire - I have been to the Maxmat in Guia today and they DO have a floor sander for hire - my catalogue is out of date I guess

It's very important when using a Floor Sander not to 'gouge' the wood. Suggest you use a coarse paper first, to get the bulk of the old varnish/stain off and then use a finer paper to finish off. Make sure you then clean the floor with a vacuum, followed by white spirit rubbed on with a soft cloth. It's worth doing this cleaning at least twice. Use only the very best stain and the hardest varnish you can buy. I used a product called Dacrylate which is available in the UK. It was excellent. The result has been that instead of redoing the floor every 2 years or so, it is now 5 years plus since it was done, and it still looks just as good!
